    Strange and Interesting Read

When I first started reading this novel, I wasn't certain if I liked it but I felt compelled to continue reading. I'm glad I finished it. Sarah Monette spun a tale that is almost completely character driven, unlike most novels in this genre. The characters are completely human and flawed and even flawed when they are winning against adversity. After finishing the book I immediately purchased the two that follow this excellently written story.

    A dogs breakfast!

I tried with all my might to make it through the first 50 pages... but gave up at 37. Convoluted, stilted, rambling are the words that come to mind. Glad it was cheap!

    Really dark fantasy

Sarah Monette was recently nominated for the John W Campbell award for best new writer. The two main characters, Felix the magician and Mildmay the cat-burglar, are both written in first-person and their voices are strikingly different and well-characterized, while the setting, the sprawling city of Melusine, teems with ghosts and monsters.
Fantasy cover-art mystifies me... I had to take off this book's jacket while I was reading it because I disliked it so much... but the book itself was rivetingly dark and labyrinthine.
