Mercy

by Jodi Picoult

Washington Square Press | April 3, 2001 | Trade Paperback

Police chief of a small Massachusetts town, Cameron McDonald makes the toughest arrest of his life when his own cousin Jamie comes to him and confesses outright that he has killed his terminally ill wife out of mercy.

Now, a heated murder trial plunges the town into upheaval, and drives a wedge into a contented marriage: Cameron, aiding the prosecution in their case against Jamie, is suddenly at odds with his devoted wife, Allie -- seduced by the idea of a man so in love with his wife that he''d grant all her wishes, even her wish to end her life. And when an inexplicable attraction leads to a shocking betrayal, Allie faces the hardest questions of the heart: when does love cross the line of moral obligation? And what does it mean to truly love another?

Praised for her "personal, detail-rich style" (Glamour), Jodi Picoult infuses this page-turning novel with heart, warmth, and startling candor, taking readers on an unforgettable emotional journey.

    What Would You Do???

    Novel Obsession

How much do you believe in the power of love? Enough to work on saving a marriage after the ultimate betrayal - an affair? Enough to walk away? Enough to end the suffering of the worst kind - an incurable illness? Mainly built around a man who loved his terminal wife enough to fulfill her last request, regardless of the consequences he'd have to face. All of these questions arise when you read Mercy....this book made me think. What would I do if ever faced with such obstacles? I don't think I'll ever know. But this is a great story....an easy read too. I really enjoyed Mercy, as well as every Picoult I've read so far. So, what would you do???

    Makes you think!

Jodi Picoult always manages to write novels about the most controversial subjects. I always find that I start the novel thinking one way, and by the end of the novel, I'm questioning myself. Mercy is no exception. This novel is about a man who is madly in love with his dying wife, who has asked him the biggest favour of all, to kill her. Scary.

Although not my favourite novel by Jodi (this was the third I have read), Mercy is still a very good read. The actual writing is brilliant.
Mercy is about Jamie, a man who kills his wife because she asks him to. She is suffering from cancer, and nothing is helping, it has spread to her brain. Maggie is in intense pain and suffers from hallucinations. Jamie does not want to kill his wife, but does because she begs him to. He travels to the town Cameron, his cousin, lives in because he is the police chief there, and Jamie thinks he will be treated fairly. Mysterious Mia comes to town the same day as Jamie does, and Cam is drawn to her. For the first time in his life, he does the unexpected.
Jodi has an amazing ability to take controversial situations and turn them into hearthfelt novels. The situations may be unusual but she makes them real. Another recommendation from me!

Police chief and clan chieftain Cameron McDonald arrests his cousin Jamie when he confesses to killing his wife, Maggie. Maggie had asked Jamie to kill her after a prolonged and painful illness from cancer. Jamie is so in love with his wife that he does as she asks.

Cameron is married to Allie. Allie supports Jamie and helps him in his defense. This book questions the right to kill someone (euthanasia). Whatever side of the controversy it is an inflamatory subject.

Allie owns a local flower shop and employs a new person to the town, Mia. Cameron is instantly attracted to Mia. This supplies more discord to Allie and Cameron's marriage.

I did not enjoy this book as much as some of Picoult's other books but it was still a great read. Maggie was selfish not committing suicide instead of insisting on Jamie's involvement. Picoult did not explain this very well.
