Metro Girl

by Janet Evanovich

HARPERCOLLINS PUBLISHERS | September 8, 2005 | Mass Market Paperbound

Alexandra (Barney) Barnaby roars onto the Miami Beach scene in hot pursuit of her missing baby brother, "Wild" Bill. Leave it to the maverick of the family to get Barney involved with high-speed car chases, a search for sunken treasure, and Sam Hooker, a NASCAR driver who?s good at revving a woman's engine.

Engaged in a deadly race, Bill has "borrowed" Hooker's sixty-five-foot Hatteras and sailed off into the sunset...just when Hooker has plans for the boat. Hooker figures he'll attach himself to Barney and maybe run into scumbag Bill. And better yet, maybe he'll get lucky in love with Bill's sweetie pie sister.

The pedal will have to go to metal if Barney and Hooker want to be the first to cross the finish line, save Bill, Hooker's boat...and maybe the world.

Don't get me wrong I love Stephanie Plum but I'm new to reading them and this was a break from reading 1-8 all after another. The writing style is so similar yet the characters are different and the same in many ways. Except for Hooker he is nothing like Morelli yet you just love him too.Its funny and its one crazy moment after another.

I have read all the Plum books and the Full series and I have enjoyed them all...Metro Girl was very similar to the Plum books but not as humorous. I did enjoy the story...its one of those stories where you don't need to analyze everything, its nice light reading!

I've only read one other Evanovich book and while this wasn't as good, I still enjoyed it. I actually listened to this one on Audio as I like to have something to listen to on long drives when I'm travelling alone. The one comment I'll make about the audio is that the voice didn't seem to fit the book. I have listened to a couple of others and I have found that the reader choices better matched the main character than this did. Main character was young and voice sounded young. This one, the main character seemed like she'd be on the younger side but the voice sounded too mature? As far as content, as one reader commented, it was a little unbelievable, but what movie or book isn't? It was still OK. If I purchase other Evanovich books though, it would be based on her other series

I was surprised by Evanovich's Metro Girl; she's trying to leave Stephanie the Bondsman/woman behind and create a new Baltimore character, but I found the book predictable, tedious in places, and, unforgiveably, rife with cliches (don't we have editors anymore?). I did find her conflict character , a NASCAR driver ( Nascar Guy , as he refers to himself) to be funny and engaging, but that's about it. The rest is formulaic and relies too much on coincidence.
I found the book definitely a cut BELOW her earlier series, and won't be waiting eagerly for future adventures in this series.
