Midnight Rising

by Lara Adrian

Random House Publishing Group | March 25, 2008 | Mass Market Paperbound

In a world of shadows and dark, cosuming hungers, desire is the deadliest weapon...

For journalist Dylan Alexander, it began with the discovery of a hidden tomb, thrusting her into the center of a gathering storm of violence and secrets. But nothing is as dangerous as the scarred, lethally seductive man who rises from the shadows to draw her into his world of dark desire and endless night.

Fueled by pain and rage over a shattering betrayal, the warrior Rio has pledged his life to the war against the Rogues. He will let nothing stand in his way-least of all a mortal woman with the power to expose the entire vampire race. For an ancient evil has been awakened, and a stunning darkness is on the rise. Suddenly Dylan is powerless to resist Rio's touch, even as she uncovers a shocking link to her own past. And now she must choose: Leave Rio's midnight realm, or risk it all for the man who has shown her true passion and the infinite pleasures of the heart. . . .

    The Broken Breed

    Amy

Midnight Rising is the 4th book in fantastic Midnight Breed Series.

This book we follow Rio, the warrior who was betrayed by his mate and scarred in an explosion because of her. Rio has been trying to recover but unable to because of black out and flashbacks which has him wanting to die. He gets severe bouts of rage and physical pain from the trauma. He cannot live this way and when he is assigned to blast a crypt with the secrets of the Breed, he wants to blast it with himself inside.

Dylan Alexander is a journalist. While hiking in the Czech mountains, she is drawn to a cave in a mountain but a ghost of a female. Dylan has an extraordinary gift of seeing the dead. When entering the cave she discovers tribal art work that no one has ever seen. She believes it will be her big break with the paper. While in the cave she discovers Rio and with her pictures, she can destroy the Breed secrecy and have the biggest news story of a lifetime.

Rio must contain the problem of Dylan and her exposing the breed. While attempting to "contain" the problem he kidnaps her. Rio is on edge of losing control and Dylan soon gives him reason to live. Rio is scarred and half crazy and with his physical scars and head injury he is not at all interested in a relationship with anyone but finds himself opening up and fighting his own demons while falling in love with Dylan.

This was a great read. This series is fantastic and I cannot wait to read more.

Thanks Roger. He did remind me a bit of Zhadist, but the difference is Z had years of self hatred, Rio only had a year. These books do remind me of the brothers alot, but they are still fantastic. (nothing will replace the brothers though)

He sounds a lot like Zsadist. Great review Amy.

    Lots of Steamy Romantic Tension

Book four in the Midnight Breed series. I have been looking forward to Rio's story and this book does not disappoint, very good with lots of steamy romantic tension. I also like how Ms. Adrian layers the books (like J. R. Ward) so the story isn't just about the two main characters and she sets up the next and future books nicely. 102/1000

When Dylan Alexander discovers what appears to be a tomb deep within a cave, she knows that as a journalist this could be a big story for her. What she doesn't know is that by walking into that cave she has entered a world of vampire warriors and deadly Rogues. Within that cave is Rio, a vampire scarred by an explosion that nearly killed him and also by the pain of betrayal. Rio must bring Dylan into his world, but he cannot risk trusting her when she has the power to expose the vampire race. The problem is that passion cannot be contained for long.

Lara Adrian delivers a sensational fourth novel in the Midnight Breed series with this one! It's hot vampires at their best! Immediately I was pulled into the story because Rio was introduced in subplots during the other novels in the series, and I was curious about where Adrian would take him. The direction of the continuing inter-novel plot was fabulous and unexpected. I was just as interested in the "big" plot as I was the relationship plot between Rio and Dylan, and I couldn't tear myself away from it at all. The setting of the novel bounced around throughout the novel which kept it very exciting and suspenseful, and allowed some international characters to be revisited. Themes of trust, redemption, and purpose play a big part in the story.

Rio was introduced at the beginning of the series as a very different character than he is at the start of Midnight Rising. At the beginning of this novel, Rio is a very broken, damaged man. He's feral, miserable, and hurt beyond describing. As the novel progresses, Rio develops and changes. I enjoyed seeing Rio's growth because he is the type of character that the reader can get really attached to. Dylan is a down to earth, relatable character. Of all the female characters in the series so far, Dylan was the easiest for me to connect with because her and her family were facing a sensitive and emotional situation that is similar to something I've experienced. The novel is still a light, steamy vampire read, but I though Adrian did a good of writing Dylan facing that situation. The heat and intensity between Rio and Dylan built quickly and was thoroughly satisfying to read. There were many teaser scenes in the novel where the passion was building then got interrupted, but when the moment was right, the results were blazing and feverish!

If you are looking for a hot, intoxicating read, Midnight Rising delivers. It also has a very "warm and fuzzy" feel when you realize that the characters saved each others in more ways than one.
