Mischief

by Amanda Quick

Bantam Press | January 7, 1996 | Hardcover

Imogen Waterstone has always prided herself on being a thoroughly independent young woman, but now she needs a man of implacable will and nerves of iron. That''s why she invited Matthias Marshall, infamous Earl of Colchester, to her home in Upper Strickland. Who better than the legendary explorer to help her lay the perfect trap?

Her scheme is simple, really: She plans to let it be known that when she inherited her uncle''s collection of antiquities, she also inherited a map to a fabulous ancient treasure. She''s sure that her enemy would risk financial ruin in pursuit of the mythical artifact. And to make doubly sure the scoundrel took the bait, she wants Colchester to pretend that he''s out to seduce Imogene so that he, too, could get his hands on her map.

Yet in all of her plotting, Imogene never anticipates Colchester''s violent reaction to her request or her own electrifying reaction to him. Neither does she expect that a malevolent threat would emerge from the labyrinth of London--sinister enough to endanger her and Colchester''s lives.

The characters in this book are very likable, the second you meet them you admire them. They are intelligent and logical, and do not care for gossip which in itself is amazing especially when dealing with society. Although Matthias is named cold blooded, and even he himself considers himself without feeling, but you see through out the story that is a very honorable man. Imogen who fell in love with Matthias sees him in a different light and together they form a bond. This story has adventure, excitement, and makes you laugh. You will find it hard to put down. A real entertainment.

More and more Amanda Quick titles are finding their way to my book shelf. Mischief is the most recent addition and certainly does not disappoint. I loved the hero and heroine, Matthias and Imogen, in this story. Both are considered rather scandalous in the eyes of the ton. Imogen is considered an "original" with a reputation of being "Immodest Imogen". Matthias is a wonderful, warm character, who has been dubbed "Cold-blooded Colchester" by the ton, and perhaps even by himself. Matthias gets pulled into Imogen's scheme to avenge her friend's death. From there, many subplots develop, keeping the story interesting and fast-paced. The characters are likeable, Matthias in particular. In a sea of hard-edged heros, Amanda Quick makes him strong, yet kind and honorable at the same time. This book is a winner.
