Misconceptions: Truth, Lies, and the Unexpected on the Journey to Motherhood

by Naomi Wolf

Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group | February 4, 2003 | Trade Paperback

In The Beauty Myth the fearless Naomi Wolf revolutionized the way we think about beauty. In Misconceptions, she demythologizes motherhood and reveals the dangers of common assumptions about childbirth. With uncompromising honesty she describes how hormones eroded her sense of independence, ultrasounds tested her commitment to abortion rights, and the keepers of the OB/GYN establishment lacked compassion. The weeks after her first daughter's birth taught her how society, employers, and even husbands can manipulate new mothers. She had bewildering post partum depression, but learned that a surprisingly high.percentage of women experience it.
Wolf's courageous willingness to talk about the unexpected difficulties of childbirth will help every woman become a more knowledgeable planner of her pregnancy and better prepare her for the challenges of balancing a career, freedom, and a growing family. Invaluable in its advice to parents, Misconceptions speaks to anyone connected-personally, medically, or professionally-to a new mother.

    Finally!

Thank God Naomi had a baby! This book deals in the harsh reality of motherhood so be warned. There are no gushy metaphors here. It's not all sunshine and rainbows and this book prepared me for that more than any other. Loved the "Mother's Manifesto"!

A fascinating read. It's not depressing -- it's realistic. Wolf hits you with hard facts and doesn't try to hide the truth. Her goal, throughout this book, is to prepare and empower women on their journey to motherhood for what will likely happen during their pregnancy and labour. She discusses the medicalization of birth and its' villification as a disease to be quickly "cured, " the profit motive in medicine and OB's need to prove their value, all of which leads to the increased c-section rate. Although it's written from the American perspective, citing American statistics, I have no doubt that Canada is not far behind. A must-read for any woman that is or is planning a pregnancy.

    What a terrible Feminist book...
    Completely rude and harsh...
I got to chapter 4 before I decided to take this book back to the store...
There was nothing that made me feel comfortable about my pregnancy through this book...
I would say choose another book...unless you like negative and harsh reading.

    Necessity

Absolutely a necessity. A great modern feminist book that provides insight into the American medical business of child-delivering and the truth about the shift in family roles. It could very likely start a family-oriented revolution in the eyes of the medical establishment and society at large.
