Astrid is excited when she finds out that her Swedish grandmother, Mormor, will be coming to live with Astrid''s family after Morfar''s death. But when Mormor arrives, she is sad and grumpy, and she disapproves of Astrid''s beloved stuffed animal, Bjorn. The relationship seems doomed until one day on the way to school, Astrid loses Bjorn and Mormor goes out of her way to bring him back.
Susin Nielsen-Fernlund has been writing for Canadian television for many years, but she''s always wanted to write children''s stories. Mormor Moves In is her second picturebook. She lives with her Swedish husband and their son, Oskar. While their Swedish relatives do come to visit, none of them has moved in.
Louise-Andrée Laliberté is a well-known illustrator from Quebec. She was drawn to illustrate Mormor Moves In because she liked the silence in it. "It is a story about mourning," she wrote, "about being alone with our own sorrow, about empathy, about tenderness." She illustrated Susin Nielsen-Fernlund''s first book, Hank and Fergus (Orca, 2003), and if you look closely at Mormor Moves In, you might discover a link between the two books!
