My Operation: A Health Insider Becomes A Patient

by Sholom Glouberman

Health & Everything Publications | February 1, 2011 | Trade Paperback

Sholom Glouberman is a well-known health care expert – widely published and greatly appreciated by clients worldwide. He always expected that when he became a patient he would easily handle the system. What a shock he had! My Operation is the story of his experience as a patient. He tells it with the awareness of the expert and the growing anxiety and foreboding of the patient. His moving story is interspersed with the entire medical record of his stay. The contrasts between his intimate knowledge of the system, the impersonal record and the actual experience of being a patient make this a fascinating and illuminating read.

      helpful to you?

Mr. Glouberman clearly describes his harrowing illness: several stays in hospital, unexpected (and frightening) developments, poor communication on the part of health care providers with one another (as well as with their patients) and the multiple challenges even a seasoned health-care insider faces in trying to make his way through our complicated, bureaucratic health care system.

The book underlines the need for caregivers to hear the voices of patients and their families. This book is a good start; it includes actual copies of the author's own patient records from the hospital, justaposed with his self-recollections of those same events. A brief glossary of medical terms is included. The Patients Association of Canada, a logical next step, is described as well.

About the Author

Sholom Glouberman is founding President of the Patients’ Association of Canada. He has a BA from McGill and a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Cornell University .   He gained much of his experience in the health field in the trenches at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal and the King’s Fund in London England . With that base, he became an advisor to doctors, nurses and managers in Canada and internationally. He has designed and directed innovative management programs at the King’s Fund in England and at McGill University in Montreal . He directed the health policy think tank at the Canadian Policy Research Networks. His books and papers are in the areas of complex health systems, health in cities, health care reform and the health care experience. His experience as patient is detailed in his latest book My Operation . He is currently at work with many colleagues on the launch and development of the Patients’ Association of Canada.
