Nice Girls don't have Fangs is book one of author Molly Harper's
supposedly three book series but after checking out her website
...Hooooorahhh ...she is writing book four. You probably guessed by
now that I really liked this one and can't wait to read the others.
The series is about what happens to a plain Jane girl who's life is
suddenly taken away and now she finds herself part of the undead
crowd. It's got tons of humour, it's never boring and it even has a
bit of mystery and romance ....and I do mean a bit. The mystery
part is about as complicated as that great mathematical equation of
2 + 2. But it's still the background for a great story and the
continuing evolution of the characters. Jane's character in
particular isn't just static but is continually evolving and
changing but always keeps her down to earth qualities that make us
interested in reading about her.
The principal character in this story is one Jane Jameson...well,
actually, she's more than that, since the book is about her and the
rest are simply there as support to her adventures, and boy she
does have a lot of them since she's been recently turned into a
vampire. From boring librarian to new kid with fangs on the block,
her new lease on life is always taking her from problem to bigger
problem and the fun never stops. She just seems like the girl next
door that everyone likes but with a tad of attitude. Her comeback
lines are often laugh out loud funny and although she can't be
considered kicka$$ she isn't a pushover either. Next character on
the list would be her sire and love interest who goes by the name
of Gabriel Nightengale. Best way to describe him would be to say
he's OK, no more, no less. I simply see nothing special about him
just that he is genuinely interested in Jane and he does his best
to protect her. Next we have of course the third party interested
in the main character and at least he doesn't disappoint. He goes
by the distinctive name of Richard Cheney...yep, you guessed it,
Dick Cheney. His first name suits him to a tee. He's like the best
friend who always imagines you naked. He's the one you root for not
to get the girl but be around to spice things up and he does a
great job of it. There's are a lot of great secondary characters
like the ghost of Jane's great aunt Jettie, who always brings a
smile to my face reading about what she is up to. Next we have Zeb
Lavelle who happens to be Jane's best friend who never imagines her
as naked, also there is Andrea who can only be described as
yummy...and I really mean as in taste good. There is also Jane's
complete family that range from her likable dad to her obnoxious
sister to her pain in the rpm mom. If there is one character I
could do without she would win hands down.
The story is about what happens to a small town Kentucky librarian
who gets turned into a vampire in order to save her life. Basically
she gets laid off work, decides to get drunk at the local bar to
finally get mistaken as a deer and shot by the side of a small
country road. A vampire who was following her home must turn her
into one of his own in order to save her. Now this might sound as
almost dramatic but believe me there's humour in anything that
involves Jane. Becoming a vamp is just the beginning of her
problems when other bloodsuckers start dying and this time I mean
permanently around her. So she becomes suspect number one and vamp
law is not as tidy as our own. To make matters worse she seems to
be the target to different attempts on her well being. So how is
she going to clear her name and survive the ordeal...well...that's
all for you to read and believe me it's a worthwhile
adventure.
I actually would give this one a big 4.5 star or leaf rating, I
just love Jane's character and how everything seems to focus around
her. She changes and matures from the get go and I simply can't
wait to see where the author has in store for her. I guess the best
way to describe the book would be equal part Chicagoland Vampires
with equal part Stephanie Plum. Chances are that if you like one or
the other you will appreciate this one. Just don't get your hope up
to high for the great mystery part.
