Nice Girls Don't Have Fangs

by Molly Harper

Pocket Star | March 31, 2009 | Mass Market Paperbound

Maybe it was the Shenanigans gift certificate that put her over the edge. When children''s librarian and self-professed nice girl Jane Jameson is fired by her beastly boss and handed twenty-five dollars in potato skins instead of a severance check, she goes on a bender that''s sure to become Half Moon Hollow legend. On her way home, she''s mistaken for a deer, shot, and left for dead. And thanks to the mysterious stranger she met while chugging neon-colored cocktails, she wakes up with a decidedly unladylike thirst for blood.

Jane is now the latest recipient of a gift basket from the Newly Undead Welcoming Committee, and her life-after-lifestyle is taking some getting used to. Her recently deceased favorite aunt is now her ghostly roommate. She has to fake breathing and endure daytime hours to avoid coming out of the coffin to her family. She''s forced to forgo her favorite down-home Southern cooking for bags of O negative. Her relationship with her sexy, mercurial vampire sire keeps running hot and cold. And if all that wasn''t enough, it looks like someone in Half Moon Hollow is trying to frame her for a series of vampire murders. What''s a nice undead girl to do?

Nice Girls don't have Fangs is book one of author Molly Harper's supposedly three book series but after checking out her website ...Hooooorahhh ...she is writing book four. You probably guessed by now that I really liked this one and can't wait to read the others. The series is about what happens to a plain Jane girl who's life is suddenly taken away and now she finds herself part of the undead crowd. It's got tons of humour, it's never boring and it even has a bit of mystery and romance ....and I do mean a bit. The mystery part is about as complicated as that great mathematical equation of 2 + 2. But it's still the background for a great story and the continuing evolution of the characters. Jane's character in particular isn't just static but is continually evolving and changing but always keeps her down to earth qualities that make us interested in reading about her.

The principal character in this story is one Jane Jameson...well, actually, she's more than that, since the book is about her and the rest are simply there as support to her adventures, and boy she does have a lot of them since she's been recently turned into a vampire. From boring librarian to new kid with fangs on the block, her new lease on life is always taking her from problem to bigger problem and the fun never stops. She just seems like the girl next door that everyone likes but with a tad of attitude. Her comeback lines are often laugh out loud funny and although she can't be considered kicka$$ she isn't a pushover either. Next character on the list would be her sire and love interest who goes by the name of Gabriel Nightengale. Best way to describe him would be to say he's OK, no more, no less. I simply see nothing special about him just that he is genuinely interested in Jane and he does his best to protect her. Next we have of course the third party interested in the main character and at least he doesn't disappoint. He goes by the distinctive name of Richard Cheney...yep, you guessed it, Dick Cheney. His first name suits him to a tee. He's like the best friend who always imagines you naked. He's the one you root for not to get the girl but be around to spice things up and he does a great job of it. There's are a lot of great secondary characters like the ghost of Jane's great aunt Jettie, who always brings a smile to my face reading about what she is up to. Next we have Zeb Lavelle who happens to be Jane's best friend who never imagines her as naked, also there is Andrea who can only be described as yummy...and I really mean as in taste good. There is also Jane's complete family that range from her likable dad to her obnoxious sister to her pain in the rpm mom. If there is one character I could do without she would win hands down.

The story is about what happens to a small town Kentucky librarian who gets turned into a vampire in order to save her life. Basically she gets laid off work, decides to get drunk at the local bar to finally get mistaken as a deer and shot by the side of a small country road. A vampire who was following her home must turn her into one of his own in order to save her. Now this might sound as almost dramatic but believe me there's humour in anything that involves Jane. Becoming a vamp is just the beginning of her problems when other bloodsuckers start dying and this time I mean permanently around her. So she becomes suspect number one and vamp law is not as tidy as our own. To make matters worse she seems to be the target to different attempts on her well being. So how is she going to clear her name and survive the ordeal...well...that's all for you to read and believe me it's a worthwhile adventure.

I actually would give this one a big 4.5 star or leaf rating, I just love Jane's character and how everything seems to focus around her. She changes and matures from the get go and I simply can't wait to see where the author has in store for her. I guess the best way to describe the book would be equal part Chicagoland Vampires with equal part Stephanie Plum. Chances are that if you like one or the other you will appreciate this one. Just don't get your hope up to high for the great mystery part.

" He’s like the best friend who always imagines you naked." That is a perfect description of Dick! I assure you, the adventures keep getting crazier in the next two books. We've got a creepy possible step-grandpa, a werewolf wedding to plan, and strange secrets that Gabriel seems to be keeping! Yipee! Good fun.

    Buggy

Wow thanks Rohg, this sounds really great. How I've missed this is a mystery (apparently the only one though)

Thanks A.J. ...Jane is such a great character. These are now part of my fav list.

Nice Girls Don't have Fangs turned out to be not at all what I was expecting. It was definitely a new spin on the very popular vampire bandwagon and it definitely was funny but after the first 200 pages I found Jane's humour to be a little grating. Being shelved in the romance section I was also expecting there to be more romance! I found the dialogue, especially near the end, to be a bit contrived and repetitive (especially Gabriel) and dialogue is what makes or breaks a book for me. So while I enjoyed the story, I was expecting much more from all the wonderful reviews

This book was fun, easy read. Jane is a librarian, who has a bad day that ends with her dying by the side of the road until Gabriel comes along and turns her into a vampire. She finds her new life crazier than she could have ever imagined, with the ghost of her dead aunt, her best friend dating a werewolf and vampire murder charges, jane's undead life has just begun.

Harper's humour has me laughing out loud! I will say that her plot development isn't the best, but the jokes more than make up for it.

I have to agree, there are some laugh out loud moments. I will read the read of the series, sometimes you just need the light easy reads

I did quite enjoy this book. I like how down to earth the characters are and how easy they are to relate to. Definitely funny, but I think with this topic there is still room for a lot more comedy that the author could have taken advantage of. I would definitely still recommend it for anyone looking for a nice and funny lighter read, and will be picking up the next one in the series for sure.

Nice girls don't have fangs is a first in a series by molly harper and I must say I really loved the character jane, she is really fun and I can actually relaite to her.

Jane Jameson is a librarian who loves her job working in the childrens section and is very good at her job, so it is a complete shock to her when she get's fired by her evil uptight boss.

Sad and unsure what to do now, she ends up at shannagans, a local bar and gets drunk, which is soooo unlike her. While drinking her sorrows away she meets a man named gabriel and he is very nice, charming and hot but nothing happens so she goes hoe and while walking she is mistaken for a deer gets shot and left for dead only she doesn't die.

Jane wakes up in a strange home unaware how she got there and looks around until she sees someone and that someone is gabriel, the hottie from the bar. He tells her what happened and that now she is a vampire and he is her sire.

Panicked, jane runs out of the house all the way to her own and finds her best friend zeb waiting for her and wouldn't you know he looks really tasty but before jane strikes gabriel comes and knocks zeb out and helps jane with her hunger.

After her feeding gabriel tells jane the rules and leaves. The next evening jane meets andrea, who is a blood doner chick and offers herself on behalf of gabriel to jane, reluctant at first to have a human jane sinks her fangs in and discovers a very sexual appeal to it for her and andrea so she stops before something happens. She is starting to wonder if being a vampire is bringing out all the sexyness in her that she never allowed when she was alive.

Jane decides to go out with andrea to a local vamp bar and after a few bloody coctails they leave but not before jane witnesses a vampire robbing the human bartender. Well she's not going to stand for that so she intervines and gets knocked out momentarily until help arrives, another vampire named dick(i know) and together they scare him off.

The next evening dick pays jane a visit, and trys to suduce her but then stops when he sees gabriel. Gabriel and dick don't like each other, I won't go into details, i'll just say "men" so he departs with a promise to see her again.

Jane is shocked by all this male attention but snapps out of it and asks why gabriel is here. He informs her that wade, the vampire jackass from the bar is dead and she is the prime suspect. He also tells jane to stay away from dick(the vamp) and that he wants jane all to himself, he is fascinated by her and wants her.

A few days ago she was "plain jane" now she has men courting her is a vampire has no job someone is trying to frame her for murders and she has to deal with her friends and family too! Including her dead aunt who she now sees.

This book was a non stop hoot, I love jane and I can't wait to read more.

Meet Jane Jameson, librarian extraordinaire, an avid collector of unicorn figurines and some serious quotes in referral to Jane Austen and I did I mention she is a newly turned vampire. The night life just got interesting with this firecracker. What a good time.

Jane Jameson is having a very bad day; she just got fired from her job as being a librarian, a job that she loves because books are her everything. She deals with the sadness by getting drunk and hashing out her problems to a bartender that's not listening and doesn't really care anyway. She meets a Mr tall, dark and handsome and embarrasses herself with her loose tongue from being very inebriated, the handsome stranger then sobers her up and sends her on her way. The car then breaks down, Jane is then mistaken for a Deer she gets shot falls in ditch and left for dead. So funny in all its pathetic sadness.

When Jane wakes up three days after, she gets the shocking surprise of being one of the undead. That talk doesn't go well with and Mr tall, dark and handsome is her sire and he goes by the name of Gabriel. Now Jane has to deal with starting all over again. Talk about a whole lot of first, and Jane doesn't do well with firsts judging from her human life. Clumsy and awkward mixed in with paleness and an allergy to the sun. Whooza Jane has got it made, with her Guide for the Undead in one hand and a bottle of O neg in the other. Welcome to the world of the dark and downright crappy. Crappy for Jane I should say.

Now someone out to get rid of Jane, and only a few months into her new world of being vampy she's got murder under her belt and vampire rules state you can't kill another of their kind without some serious reasons, so off to the tribunal. What's a girl to do get some peace around town, a stake through the heart and getting dusty is sounding real good. Plus some strong emotions for Gabriel is surfacing and she's liking the way that feels. Jane's got herself a man, an obstacle that she was having while being alive and boom dead equals you land yourself a sexy man. YaY!!

This book is downright hilariousity, Jane is the funniest female character in a book I have ever read. The things she says are just classic. A Dr Seuss quote had me in stitches, her gift of turning every comment into a laugh riot is deserving of an Oscar. Plus the supporting characters makes Jane shine. It's the first time a female has overshadowed a guy for me, Gabriel who didn't even care what he was doing. This series will be going down as one of my faves. I can't wait to see Jane shine in the upcoming books. Still lmfao .

Jane just lost her job, gets drunk and gets killed because she is mistaken for deer. At least Gabriel was there to save her by turning her into a vampire.

As Jane tries to deal with her rebirth she finds that life has not any better. Her best friend Zeb has to join a support group to deal Jane's new life, meets a werewolf and gets engaged. Jane's parents act like nothing has changed which is a step up from her sister and Grandmother who act like Jane does not exist. At least her late aunt's ghost is around to help her.

Jane makes some new friends. Gabriel, sire and lover. Andrea, a temping type AB negative in the vampire world. Dick, Gabriel's old friend/enemy. Missy the local vampire realtor and Dick's "girlfriend".

Jane is barely turned as she is up on charges for killing another vampire in a bar fight. Jane proves her innocence in the charges and is warned to stay out of trouble. The Vampire Council will make an example out of her. They don't want new vampires setting bad examples.

Missy invites Jane to a mixer to get her to make vampire friends. Jane tries to mingle more with her new vampire community and finds that the crowd already knows about her. Seems someone has been spreading torrid stories about her and Dick. It maybe Dick. Jane really finds herself in a spot when Dick is killed in a mobile home explosion and she is believed to have done it as the scorned lover. As Dick's girlfriend Missy challenges Jane to a fight to the death on Dick's behalf.

This book was hot and funny, probably my favourite combination. I really like Jane. I found that she was very realistic and quite sarcastic. Some of the things that pop out of her mouth just had me howling.

This book was funny and entertaining. It took me a while to get in to it but after a couple of pages I was hooked and could not put it down the main character Jane is one smart mouthed heroine. The setting was perfect for this story having grown up in small town myself I could definitely relate. I will be reading the next book in the series for sure. If you are looking for a fun read with lots of paranormal chemistry then this book is for you.

Jane Jameson just lots her job, got mistaken for a deer and got shot only to be rescued by the Tall, Dark and Yummy stranger (Gabriel) that she met at the bar just minutes ago. Now she is the newest member of the undead and the owner of Guide For The Newly Undead handbook, provided by the undead welcoming committee (wow!!! who knew there would be committee!)… Now Jane has to learn all the rules, know what sections to shop at Wal-Mart, deal with a best friend that dresses up like Mr. T with crosses around his neck because he believes it will protect him from her and to top things off someone keeps trying to frame her for crimes she did not commit, being undead is not as fun as its made out to be… however there is her very sexy, delicious, protective Sire, who can't seem to keep his lips or teeth off of her, perhaps there are some perks to this lifestyle after all…

Told in the first person the story of recently unemployed librarian Jane Jameson who is mistakenly shot and is rescued by a handsome (of course) vampire who saves her by turning her. In this book the world is aware that vampires exist, though in the small town where Jane lives there aren't that many, or so she taught. I really enjoyed the humor in this book, it's much lighter than some of the vampire books I've read lately. I think if you like Sookie Stackhouse, you'll love Jane Jameson. 41/1000

The biggest thing that Nice Girls Don't Have Fangs has going for it is humour - Molly Harper writes a really funny tale. Jane Jameson's becomes a vampire after she's left for dead at the side of the road after being mistaken for a deer. Ever practical, Jane is looking to get on with her undead life (shopping in the undead section of Wal-Mart, finding a job with vamp friendly hours etc...) but someone's not too happy that she's been made one of the undead and would like to see her meet her end - again. The book doesn't quite have all the pieces in place to make it great - the suspense isn't really there, the romance is never really in question, and there's really nothing flashy to Jane's undead world. I guess in a sense this makes Nice Girls a pretty realistic take on what would happen if we lived in a world where vamps existed and you were suddenly one of them. Despite this, Jane is a really funny character and I loved her sarcasm and wit and I had a good chuckle in more than one place.

So I'm going to skip the plot synopsis, since everyone else has covered that. I found this book to be simply good, not horrible, but not wonderful. What made it simply good was the lack of major "OMG CAN"T BELIEVE THAT JUST HAPPENED!" kind of moments, but at the same time it was quirky, and had some light humor, as well as some simple romance.
One thing that did bug me was by the ending I was starting to get flashbacks to the "Undead" series by MaryJanice Davidson, which was faintly annoying. But overall a nice read.

Nice Girls Don't Have Fangs is the first book by Molly Harper. It's the story of a small town librarian named Jane who manages to lose her job and her life all on the same day. While this scenario may remind you of another hapless girl turned vampire queen (a.k.a. Betsy, MaryJanice Davidson's hilarious heroine), don't worry, this is not a Queen of the Vampires-wannabe book. What it is, is a light, very funny look at the whole newly undead scenario.

As a heroine, Jane is as quirky as they come and she narrates the story with snarky sarcasm. While some of the humour is situational, mostly it's Jane's reactions to the situations and the words that tumble out of her mouth that make the story funny.

Being newly undead, doesn't mean that Jane suddenly has it easy. In fact, since she just lost her job, she's faced with the daunting task of finding a new one so that she can keep a roof over her head and kibble in her dog's bowl. Finding a job when you are, shall we say, pulse-challenged, and only available evenings is not easy. Just take Jane's unfortunate foray into telemarketing, a career that she decides that even as a vampire she just isn't evil enough to pursue, as an example.

Nice Girls Don't Have Fangs shows plenty of potential and makes a great start to this series. If you are looking for a light, fun read with supernatural elements then ex-librarian, Jane Jameson could well be the girl for you.

A bit slow, some good humour a little bit too repetitive for the first two thirds of the book. The last 50 or so pages were the best part of the book, a fair bit of action. Fairly enjoyable but no Sookie Stackhouse.

The strongest part of this book is by far Molly Harper's humour. The off-hand comments that she has her character, Jane, give, and the one liners had me giggling for most of the book.

Other then that, I found the plot and character development average at best. The "human" situations in this story were rather unbelieveable (and if those can't be bought, then what hope do the preternatural parts have?). A librarian who gets no warning, no severance, no reference? Not likely. And the drunk who shoots our poor heroine out of his truck, mistaking her for a deer? Something tells me that this is not something that one needs to fear in real life.

Still, I will probably pick up the next one, just for the sake of the giggles. It was a nice, light read. And sometimes, we all need something like that.

Usually I'm not one to laugh out-loud when I read... But this is one of the few that I found myself incapable of NOT laughing! It was so humourous in parts, that you have to set the book down to stop laughing. The author really knows how to grab, and keep, a readers attention. I found it in the Romance section, personally, I'd place it in the YA department. A very light, seductive (I stayed up all night to finish it) read.

    • Was this review
      helpful to you?

When i bought this book, i found it in the romance section, thus based on that and the somewhat cheesy cover, i was asking myself "what am i getting myselft into?" type questions. I was pleasantly surprised. Why, you ask??? Because there was A LOT more comedy than anything else in this book. Some romance but it's comparable to some YA and Horror books i read!

Anyways, this book is about an educated librarian named Jane. Right off the bat she is fired from her job at the library, and given a severence pkg. that includes coupons & gift card to a local bar and grill type place. Naturally after her totally unfair dismissal, she drowns her sorrows at said bar and drains the gift card promptly. Here she meets Gabriel - mysteriously delicious Gabriel. In a drunken stupor naturally she entertains him with her ability to spew all her life details without hesitation and give out those wonderful useless nuggets of knowledge (she's knows a lot of trivia type stuff). He is somehow still attracted to her and follows her home without her knowing it. She heads home in her car - drunk driving is still not cool in my books - when her car dies. She stuck in the pitch black along a road that is surrounded by forest. Naturally she trips into a ditch and lands on her hands and knees full of dirt. Another car passes, filled with a local drunkard who drives with a shotgun, and shoots her fatally (yes i'm not lying) because he thinks she's a DEER (seriously, i know). While her life flashes before her eyes, knowing she's going to die of a freak deer-shooting-while-drunk-accident Gabriel saves her life by making her immortal. Yes, this is how we find out Gabriel is a vampire - although you can kind of predict that at the bar!

From here on out, she struggles with her new UNdead life, and how to come to terms with it. She doesn't know what to make of her attraction to Gabriel, and that relationship throughout the book has some ups and downs like a great rollercoaster ride should! Her bestfriend Zeb finds out through her almost killing him, but he slowly adapts to having a vampire bestfriend - he realizes she's still the same pain in the butt. One of the more entertaining characters she meets is Dick, who we find out is a frenemy of Gabriel, and vamp, but who loves to say awesomely innappropriate things to Jane. Their banter is quite good. Her family is painful except for her dad and dead aunt Jettie who is a ghost in her house and provides great comic relief.

On top of her adjusting to life as a vamp, and all the woes surrounding it, someone is trying to frame her for some vampire killings. Strange things are happening to her as well, in terms of rumors that label her a giant ho, nearly killing her dog, and her getting shot again. So to make this book more purposeful, there is a mystery there as well!

Overall, this book is good summer filler material for those who want something paranormal, funny, and realllllly light! I mean some parts of this book - some of the flashbacks - were terribly unnecessary. I am personally not a fan of unwarranted descriptiveness. But i laughed throughout and enjoyed the romantic scenes we did get, and as an in-between when you don't want something to heavy and dramatic, this one is good.

Definitely more filler unless this is your style of book - but i recommend it if you want something light that doesn't require much thought but rather a nice relaxing read.

    Enjoy!

certain things are similar - turned into a vamp against their will etc., but overall they both stand on their own... This is not as good as Chicagoland Vampires, but its cute, and its fluff! Has some good light and funny moments in it! I don't think i enjoyed the second one as much, but i'll keep reading!
