Nigella Express: Good Food Fast

by Nigella Lawson

October 23, 2007 | Hardcover

Nigella Lawson and her style of cookery have earned a special place in our lives, symbolizing all that is best, most pleasurable, most hands-on and least fussy about good food. But that doesn't mean she wants us to spend hours in the kitchen slaving over a hot stove.

Featuring fabulous fast foods, ingenious short cuts, terrific time-saving ideas and easy, delicious meals, Nigella Express is her solution to eating well when time is short. Here are mouthwatering recipes, quick to prepare and easy to follow, that you can conjure up after a long day in the office or on a busy weekend. When time is precious, you can't spend hours shopping or cooking, so you need to make life easier by being prepared. This is food you can make as you hit the kitchen running, with vital tips on how to keep your store cupboard stocked, and your fridge and freezer stacked. Not that the recipes are basic-though they are always simple-but it's important to make every ingredient earn its place in a recipe. Minimize effort by maximizing taste. And here, too, is great food that can be prepared quickly but cooked slowly in the oven, leaving you time to have a bath or a drink, talk to friends or do homework with your children. It's minimum stress for maximum enjoyment.

This is a new generation of fast food-never basic, never dull, always do-able, quick and delicious. The Domestic Goddess is back and this time it's instant.

    Nigella's delights

    Lesley Carol Prince

I love Nigella Lawson's writing as much as I enjoy reading and trying her recipes. She is so honest in admitting her own contradictions, e.g., she often repeats easy, favourite recipes when pressed for time. The big message of this book is a well-stocked pantry of condiments, spices and storage items such as shallots, garlic, ginger, etc. These are the ingredients that 'ring the changes' from recipe to recipe. Express cooking doesn't mean boring or timing recipes as North American cooking mavens do. I love reading her introductions to recipes. Her prose is breezy, elegant and informative, all at the same time.

Nigella’s fast food is luscious, rich and runs the gambit from everyday fare to fancy.

This beautiful book is filled with quick, easy, and delicious recipes. Nigella writes like she speaks and her descriptions and forwards are an amusing bonus to the recipes. I recommend this book for anyone who is pressed for time (all of us) and doesn't like to sacrifice taste for simplicity.

Yet another fabulous book from Nigella! Apart from the beautiful pink and grey presentaion with wonderful retro pictures. The actual content and concept of this book is fantastic.
I have two children who love tasty food (who doesn't?) and I needed some new ideas for quick meals! You will find plenty of them in this book and your kids will love trying out some new flavours!! Popular with my two are the white bean mash, chicken schnitzel with bacon and green eggs and ham (frequently accompanied by the Dr Seuss story of the same name!).

Don't be put off by the "Express" element of the title! This is a great book with just enough Nigella chat to also make it a good read when you're not cooking.

From the Critics

"Nigella has become the idealized homemaker de nos jours, the domestic cook we would all like to be. . . . Her recipes are rich and motherly and sustaining and sexy, just as she is."
