Three books about soul-mates and forbidden love

The stories ended when I got used to the characters. But I'm getting used to the quick endings that leave you curious about what will happen next. I'm hoping to see the characters from these three books in future books and see what has happened to them. I hope the next book it isn't another story about soul-mates and forbidden love.

L.J. Smith has made an interesting world, which has certain laws that apply to vampires, witches, and werewolves. It is a mysterious world that makes you want to learn more about it.

SECRET VAMPIRE - 4/5: Hooked from the very first sentence
"It was on the first day of summer vacation that Poppy found out she was going to die." (5)

Poppy North goes to El Camino High with her friend James that she has known since kindergarten. Poppy is in love with James, but he never has returned her feelings. Poppy is diagnosed with cancer, just when she thought that she would make the most of her summer with James.

James Rasmussen is a handsome vampire with hidden secrets. He is a lamia, a born vampire, that is subject to the laws of the Night World...

DAUGHTERS OF DARKNESS - 4/5: Interesting story, but too many characters
"And what if that happened to you-if you found somebody and you were soulmates with them and you didn't want to be?" (377)

It was a difficult story to get into, perhaps because there were so many characters. The story seemed to be enclosed around a box, it felt like it was lacking a real world, even though there were many main characters; perhaps it was because it took place during the summer.

Mary-Lynnette is a human, who's interested in astronomy and star-gazing, and who has often spoken to and helped out an old, crazy neighbour named Mrs. Burdock. She is told that Mrs. Burdock's three nieces are coming to live with her: Rowan, Kestrel, and Jade.

Mary-Lynnette's younger brother, Mark, does not have a girlfriend, which Mary-Lynnette finds odd, and wishes on Jupiter that he finds one; perhaps one of Mrs. Burdock's nieces would be good for him. He's going to be in junior high after the summer is over and he is shy. Even Mary-Lynnette doesn't have a boyfriend, although there is one boy that interests her, Jeremy. She thinks all good-looking boys are lacking in intelligence.

Rowan, Kestrel, and Jade are vampires trying to escape from the Night World's laws, and the old, traditional way of life. They don't want to get married to a person of their father's choice. They wait for their Aunt Opal Burdock to come pick them up, but their aunt doesn't show up. In the end, they try to hitch a ride to their aunt's house. There, they find an unrecognisable body in a pile of clothes-their aunt's dead body.

After the nieces had moved in, there has been no sign of their aunt. One night Mary-Lynnette sees the sisters carrying a large black sack and burying it in the yard. Mary-Lynnette thinks the three sisters have murdered their aunt.

That's when Ash shows up, the brother of the sisters. He irritates Mary-Lynnette so much. He wants to decide who his sisters should talk to, what they should do. But there's something about him, that handsome jerk, something that sends sparks flying throughout her body.

When Mary-Lynnette finally convinces Mark, who has become quite fond of Jade, to help investigate, they discover a secret. Who has killed Mrs. Burdock? And why does Mary-Lynnette get that weird feeling when she is around Ash, even though she detests him?

SPELLBINDER - 4.5/5: So far, the most exciting book in the series
Two cousins, Thea and Blaise Harman, are witches, but not pure witches, they have a bit of vampire blood in them and are related to James and Ash, vampires from the previous two books. Thea and Blaise have been sent from one relative to the next because they keep getting expelled from school. Now they are living with their Grandma Harman in Las Vegas.

The first day of school, Thea sees a group of students around a snake, poking it, some shouting to kill it. She is afraid for the snake, and then she sees it getting ready to strike. She tries to merge their minds together, and just when she's getting it to calm down, a boy named Eric Ross sends her flying to the side.

Eric gets bitten by the snake, but he tells all the students that the snake didn't bite. Thea takes her cousin Blaise's necklace, and she and Eric carry the snake into the bushes. There, she looks at Eric's leg and heals it with the stone on the necklace, then pretends that he was just imagining he got bitten. She feels some sort of odd connection with him. Why was he willing to risk his life for the snake? When Eric shows his interest for, she tells him that she doesn't want to see him again.

But what is she to do if her cousin Blaise starts to show interest in Eric? Blaise-the same cousin that has turned boys crazy for her with the use of magic. And what if Thea's spell goes wrong and she releases a terrible spirit into the world?

Takes a bit to get going...

I've read this entire series now, some of the stories are fantastic and some are forgettable. AT first (like with this one) it's like reading individual short stories that have nothing to do with each other. This is problematic because you get attached to the characters. Thankfully further on down the series everyone meets up and you catch up with all the characters and see the bigger picture.

The best story by far is the first one about Poppy. Poppy has cancer and reading things from her perspective makes this fantasy a very real story. I found it difficult to read in that it made me scared of the illness.

All three stories within this book are well written. The characters from each story connect to one another at some point making the stories even better. Night World is a must read for those who adore vampires, witches and werewolves.

This is a compilation of the three first book of the Night World series : Secret Vampire, Daughters of Darkness and Spellbinder. Each storie tell the story of a teenage girl who breaks the law of the Night World or who is the reson for breaking it.

These stories kind of have all the same plot but they are still very different from each others but there are all about love, of course!

I like all three stories but at the end of each I would be sad because I get attached to the characters but I knew that it was the end of their story because the others books won't be focused on them. Still I really recommend this book to everyone who love lovestories with great end!

Well, I picked this book up on a whim. 30% off the cover price at my local Loblaws. I thought it is going to be good because I really like the show Vampire Diaries and the woman that wrote this novel also wrote the books that show is based on.

Well I must say that I was terribly disappointed in Night World # 1. I was certainly not keen on the writing style, nor on the character development. Then, just as the author is finally pulling me in, the story ends. Then the next short story begins.

I managed to suffer through the first 250 pages to build the connection to characters and then it just ends.

Therefore I have no patience to read the rest. Started story # 2 but just don't think I can do it.

I do not recommend this novel.

The same thing happened to me, I liked the first story in the book, and when I got into the characters, the story just ended. I started the second story, but I stopped reading it after a few pages; it's been about a year now, and I don't feel like picking it up again, but I also made a bad decision of ordering the second novel (also about a year or so back). Now I'll have to read them one day. The worst part is that the second story also seemed to be about forbidden love, just like the first one was. It seems like a dull concept to put into more than one story. Great review!

I thought that this book was better than the 2nd but, the 2nd is still worth reading! I love the way Lisa has made a new world with its on history and laws she really did great! I personaly could have survived without Secret Vampire but it was ok. My fav was Daughters of Darkness. This series is not scary at all. I give this book a 10/10!!!

I really liked it. The stories were great and the characters were very likeable. I didn't enjoy the first story that much, it was kind of dry, but I really liked the other two. The only thing is the writing isn't always the best or that detailed. With a bit better writing and some more detail, these stories would have been perfect!

I loved this book. It's a collection of 3 Night World stories.

The 1st is Secret Vampire which is about a girl named Poppy who find out she's dying. What Poppy doesn't know is that her one chance a living lies with her best friend/secret crush who happens to be a vampire.

The 2nd story is Daughters of Darkness. This story is about a star gazer named Mary-Lynette who befriends 3 sisters who are runaways from the Night World. The trouble is the girls brother Ash is after them to come home or else. Before Ash can make his sisters leave, he ends up finding his soulmate putting him in just as much trouble as his sisters.

The 3rd story id Spellbinder. This is the story of Thea and Blaise, a pair of cousins witches who become enemies when Thea breaks the first rule of Night World; Never fall in love with a human.

All three stories are terrific. They will make you smile and have you reaching for a box of tissues. I can't wait to pick up volume 2.

This book don't have alot of extra backstory, 3 stories in one book and characters from each story are mentioned and you get the feeling that they are happening around the same time just in different places. I would say really good book for teenagers, older readers may not enjoy them as much.

Not the best book I've read, but not too bad. I can't say I'm a huge fan of Smith's writing style though; it doesn't seem "real" enough...
The story ideas were alright, but they kept repeating, which got a little annoying after awhile. Vampire (and witch)falls for human, they tell them about the Night World, they try to hide it from the Elders...Smith should have changed it up a bit more than just that basic storyline and an additional problem (cancer, murders, spirits), and this book would have been a lot better.

Are you serious! I hope not every single one of the stories is like that b/c I have the first 2 books. I read the first story and started on the second, and the second one seemed to be going into the forbidden love again. It sucks that after you get so attached to the character, a new story starts. Great review.

    Liz (Midnight Bloom)

the first one is the 'slowest' but once you reach the 2nd and 3rd one, it definitely picks up. each of them has the 3 love stories with the recurring soul mate principle but each one is really exciting still! this one was more like to introduce readers to the Night World but book 2 and 3 just sort of jump right in.....

    Midnight Sunrise

thanks. :) yeah, i have the second book too. i bought it with the first book. but they do repeat a lot, and the stories get kind of dull after awhile. i'm not so sure i want to read the second night world book, but if i have nothing else to read, i could give it a try.

    Night World #1

Night World...It's a world filled with Vampires, Witches, Werewolves and Shape shifters, they are all around us in every day life, we do not know who they are, as they stay well hidden. Each part within this book, these beings from the night world are in constant battle to live amongst us, as they are not allowed to fall in love with us, or to tell us anything about who they are...the consequence for doing so is DEATH...it is hard, as they do fall in love...and they find their SOULMATES.

Night World consists of 3 different stories - the characters are related to each other but the stories are separate. It was an easy likeable book but designed for much younger audiences. It would have been a great book to read when I was fourteen...

I enjoyed this book very much :) But it wasn`t - to me - as good as the second one. The first story was kind of shallow-y, but the next 2 had more depth in it. More action, I guess. But Spellbinder was the one that made me hold my breath until it was safe :P
    LOVED IT :)

For some novel that have younger main characters they are written in such a way that the character seem wise beyond their years, and so I can relate to them, this was not the case for this series of books. Probably well loved by the teenage crowd, just not for me.
