Connelly, being one of my favourite writers has done it again with the "9 Dragons". An excellent plot which finishes in the last pages. I liked the way he wound the Chinese triads into his story. Haller and Bosch make a super pair. Highly recommended.

Book 14 in the Harry Bosch series This is once again Michael Connelly at his best, a master at writing fictional police stories in a highly entertaining and captivating way. His protagonist one of the smartest detectives in the fictional world is Harry Bosch. In this novel, Harry will face numerous difficulties investigating the death of a struggling Chinese shop owner and will be plunged deep into the deadly world of Triads, a criminal mentality that presents many new challenges. The second part of the story gets quite gripping when Harry’s daughter is kidnapped in Hong Kong by the Triads, a last ditch attempt to derail Harry from his LA investigation. He must reunite and team up with his ex-wife in order to find their child. In a true Hollywood style script, Harry and his wife face the Triads on their home ground, where dead bodies keep piling up in the cities of Kowloon and Hong Kong. Harry risks everything to outmatch the Triads’ ferocity. In the never ending action, Mr Connelly colourfully describes the people, the surroundings and the underground culture, a definite stimulation to the reader’s imagination. This novel is plot driven with plenty of action and numerous twists and turns some may be predictable but all are suspenseful. The dialogue is sharp and the narrative is concise and witty. Harry’s character has been given a fresh look, a look of a super detective with the gens of a pit bull and the necessary attributes required to deal with the extreme situations encountered in this novel. This is a page turner, hard to put aside…

I really, really, really (spellcheck keeps telling me to fix that but it's true) - enjoy Michael Connelly's writing. I've read everything he's written and enjoy the books featuring some of his other characters, but Detective Harry Bosch is my hands down favourite. Bosch is back in Nine Dragons. Harry is called to investigate a shooting at a liquor store in a rough L.A. neighbourhood. The case seems to have gang overtones, so a detective from the Asian Gang Unit is brought in to help. The case is bigger than just south L.A. though with tendrils reaching to the triads in Hong Kong. Hong Kong.....where his daughter lives. Harry has always operated at the far end of the law, doing what he sees as right and pursuing justice on his terms. His single minded pursuit of justice has, for the most part, worked well for him in the past. But things change with this case. It's gotten personal for one thing. And that may be clouding his judgement. His current partner is no help, he doesn't know if he can trust the gang detective, he doesn't understand the language or customs and he's going way too fast. Mistakes could be very costly. Harry has always been a flawed character, but in this latest book, we get to see a different side of Harry. One that isn't always sure of himself and a bit more of his personal life. There is a shift in his focus and priorities. It's great that Connelly continues to grow and change Harry, that he isn't a stagnant character, repeatedly doing the same thing. Break neck action, an intricate plot and some great twists in the ending all add up to an unputdownable read. Really, really, really.

I started reading Michael Connelly book couple years ago, then I bought all his previous novels, and i can feel the story and the characters are getting more mature, the new book Nine Dragons is another great novel. I were borned in Hong Kong, so i can see the descriptions of Hong Kong is so real. I can actually feel that i were in Hong Kong with Harry Bosch. I am glad to see that Michael Connelly started expand the story background globally, instead of just staying in America. Hope to see more of his novels expanding the backround globally. Congratulation for another success story!
