Nineteen Minutes

by Jodi Picoult

February 5, 2008 | Trade Paperback

Jodi Picoult, bestselling author of My Sister''s Keeper and The Tenth Circle, pens her most riveting book yet, with a startling and poignant story about the devastating aftermath of a small-town tragedy.

Sterling is an ordinary New Hampshire town where nothing ever happens--until the day its complacency is shattered by an act of violence. Josie Cormier, the daughter of the judge sitting on the case, should be the state''s best witness, but she can''t remember what happened before her very own eyes--or can she? As the trial progresses, fault lines between the high school and the adult community begin to show--destroying the closest of friendships and families. Nineteen Minutes asks what it means to be different in our society, who has the right to judge someone else, and whether anyone is ever really who they seem to be.

The judges' career is highlighted and then the author pretty much turns away from that story line and focus on the accused trial. A surprising turn of events made the ending a bit surprising.

This women is my favourite i do believe, i have yet to read a book by her that i dont like! if you like anything else by her, no questions - just read it. if your interested in the ENTIRE story, to learn about the characters, the entire situation, not just what a main character wants you to know this is for you, she always talks about real situations and real stories, pulling the reader in and allowing them to understand all angles of the story.

This book is about a troubled teen who was bullied to the point of a school shooting. The book has a good topic but it is dragged on to the point of exhaustion. Most of the book isn't even about the shooting or the shooter.

Plot: The Town of Sterling, New Hampshire is a quiet town, where not much excitement happens. All that changes when the small town is rattled with a devastating, violent tragedy. A town that was once recognized for it's very minimal crime record is now known for one of the most horrendous of crimes. A School Shooting.

Review: This is one of my favourite Jodi Picoult books to date, all though that list pretty much contains all her books, There hasn't been a Jodi Picoult book that I've disliked yet. Nineteen Minutes is a very emotionally charged book. Almost all emotions rise to the surface with this book, Sadness, Anger, Sympathy, Hate...Jodi Picoult is known for her twists and surprises and this book didn't fall short. Just when I thought I had it figured out, something would spin the story into another direction that I wasn't expecting. In the Acknowledgements Jodi Picoult writes " To The Thousands of Kids out there who are a little bit different, a little bit scared, a little bit unpopular: this one's for you." That's exactly what this book is about, People who struggle to fit in, which is everyone at some point or another. In this book Jodi Picoult gives a voice to those people. This book is a definite must read. Make sure you keep the Kleenex close by for this one..

Yes!! Once again, Ms. Picoult has captivated audiences with her spectacular portrayal of one of the "hot topic" issues in the world-a school shooting.

I find that with her books, my former opinions seem to change, as Ms. Picoult writes from every perspective, leaving the reader with a 360 degree perspective. Without giving too much away, I have to say this is one of my favourite books by her so far!

Certainly wayy up there with her best work yet that I have read.
This is one that I would look forward to seeing on the big screen one day. The topic alone captivates your from the beginning and makes it near impossible to put this book down.
    Highly recommend this one.

I borrowed this book from a friend and was absolutely hooked by the 16th page! Jodi Picoult made the characters and events real to me. It was easy to be sympathetic towards Peter, even considering horrific the crime he commits. I cried through the book and loved every word. When I finished the last page I wanted to start all over again. I will definately read another of her books!

The book even started off engaging with the school shooting. So you start out hating the shoort, Peter, and end up feeling terribly sorry for all those dead. But as you read more you unravel more details and information that makes you not know which character to root for. I love the chapters that talk about the past because they're informative but also interesting. Sometimes this book madde me want to cry but overall it was an amazing story. I hope the next ones of Jodi Picoult are as good as this book or better. I recommend this to anyone who loves a good investigation as well as a drama.

I had no idea what this book was about when I chose to read it - I bought it because one of the reviews on the back cover intrigued me. Jodi Picoult certainly does her research, and the result is a book that seems to come from an expert on the subject. I can't say enough about this book - I could discuss it for days. I can't think of any good reason that kids are not reading this book in grade 9 English. It's brilliant. It's accurate. It's perfect.

I have read a few Jodi Picoult books now, and this was definitely one of the best. I found It to be jumpy, and confusing at some points. But that seems to be her writing style. Overall a nice read.

A fantastic and all too real story. The characters were very plausible, as was the school scenario. The book had me on the edge of my seat.

A classic Picoult book...deep, thought provoking, about a topic that makes you wonder how something like this could happen...and when you finish reading, you understand why, how, and because. The twist at the end was a nice touch, a Picoult personal touch.

Jodi Picoult paints a vivid description of the mind set and thoughts of several teenagers in the small New England town. We have all been to high school and know all too well the hierarchy of this closed social system. I only had one short-lived instance of bullying as a teen, but still remember it. The author knows we will all relate to this subject. This book should be required reading for our kids in Grade 7. It won't end the bullying, but it will make everyone think about the possibilities. Buy it, read it and then tell your friends.

This book touched me in a profound way. As a former educator I could relate to the characters in this novel and the pressures that they felt in their day to day existence as young adults.

I passed this on to many of my co-workers and we all had the same reaction. It was difficult to see young people who felt like their options were no longer available.

    I reccommend this book strongly.

As usual, Jodi Picoult delivers a heart stoppingly good read. I was positively gripped and amazed with her writing in a new way, in this novel. I loved every second of it and couldn't put it down. After Peter takes a gun into his highschool and shoots the people who have victimized him for his entire school life, we discover his twisted past, and all the characters who have helped him reach his breaking point. THe ending was superb ,and all the parts before it equally as good. We also meet Jodi, a gorgeous girl that Peter has secretly loved all his life. We discover the horrible truths she, and him, have to go through together to overcome the big mystery they're shrouded in. Absolutely phenomenal. I ADORED IT>
