by Elizabeth Pantley

McGraw-Hill Companies,Inc. | March 28, 2002 | Trade Paperback

A breakthrough approach for a good night''s sleep--with no tears

There are two schools of thought for encouraging babies to sleep through the night: the hotly debated Ferber technique of letting the baby "cry it out," or the grin-and-bear-it solution of getting up from dusk to dawn as often as necessary. If you don''t believe in letting your baby cry it out, but desperately want to sleep, there is now a third option, presented in Elizabeth Pantley''s sanity-saving book The No-Cry Sleep Solution.

Pantley''s successful solution has been tested and proven effective by scores of mothers and their babies from across the United States, Canada, and Europe. Based on her research, Pantley''s guide provides you with effective strategies to overcoming naptime and nighttime problems. The No-Cry Sleep Solution offers clearly explained, step-by-step ideas that steer your little ones toward a good night''s sleep--all with no crying.

Tips from The No-Cry Sleep Solution:

  • Uncover the stumbling blocks that prevent baby from sleeping through the night
  • Determine--and work with--baby''s biological sleep rhythms
  • Create a customized, step-by-step plan to get baby to sleep through the night
  • Use the Persistent Gentle Removal System to teach baby to fall asleep without breast-feeding, bottlefeeding, or using a pacifier

This has to be my favourite book on getting your baby to sleep through the night. I found this book to be a nice change from the ITS.ALL.YOUR.FAULT school of parenting books. I love Pantley's approach - it's calm, respectful and simple (while still respecting the science behind how babies sleep).

This book was created when Pantley found herself with a baby who just wouldn't sleep through the night, so this is a tested method developed by someone in the line of fire so to speak. What I really loved about this book is that while there is a central plan to follow there are a ton of suggestions that you can implement to personalize your sleep plan for baby. Pantley is a proponent of attachment style parenting (and therefore does not advocate the cry it out approach) but this book offers so many solutions that should work for any parenting style.

The No Cry Sleep Solution doesn't offer a quick fix, if you're looking for a 3 day solution this book probably isn't for you - it provides solutions that if implemented consistently will yield positive results over time (30-90 days).

I highly recommend all of Pantley's books on childcare

I noticed the No-cry sleep solution on my bedside table yesterday and realized I haven't consulted it in a long time, which, I'm sure you will agree, is an excellent state of affairs.

I had little-to-no sleep issues with our newborn, and this is due at least in part to the fact that I read this book, following a friend's suggestion, very early on (during the first 2 months of her life as I breastfed her non-stop), before any sleep "problems" ever arised. I remember marvelling at all the details in the book and felt sorry for all the mothers who needed all that advice. I have since picked it up again as we went through a small series of night-snacking. The book reminded me of little things I had forgotten and we are off on another 12-hour-nights run for a long time.

Now that I look back, I realize that I was able to prevent many interrupted nights without much thought thanks simply to the knowledge acquired from reading all that experience-based advice and the words of other mothers quoted in the book. It was as if I had dozens of sisters, aunts and mothers shouldering me and teaching me what to expect as a new mother, and who can argue with the power of that!?

The three most important concepts in the whole book for me were the "vow" to fill baby's tummy before sleep, the routine before sleep, and confirming what my insctincts were already dictating: that when baby is crying, you go to her because her needs, whatever they may be, are necessarily legitimate.

My next read: The no-cry discipline solution. Can't wait to prevent more issues by being educated and supported by this wonderful author!

I cannot say enough great things about this book. I stumbled upon it at the bookstore a few weeks back. I was looking for anything to help me get out of the fog I was walking around in from lack of sleep. I have a 10 month old daughter who is "determined, stubborn, and strong willed". This is a quote from her pediatrician. We got to the point where she would wake up 8 to 10 times a night wanting to nurse and if she didn't she would SCREAM. I mean really scream!!!! She hated her crib and would get so upset that she would start hyperventilating.

The cover with the lovely sleeping baby pulled me in and by the first paragraph I was enthralled. What made me like this book so much was the easy, gentle, open suggestions for each UNIQUE family. We were seriously sleep deprived and I was crying at the drop of a hat. Pantley's book gave me suggestions for EVERY situation. She covered the breastfeeder, the bottle feeder, co-sleeping, crib sleeping etc. At first my husband rolled his eyes at me because he said NOTHING would work..she was just stubborn. He is now Pantley's second biggest fan! (behind me of course).

I am so delighted and amazed to say that our little girl is now sleeping through the night most nights. We made a plan, STUCK TO IT, and by the 3rd night she only woken up twice, AND she put herself back to sleep once!!! I can honestly tell you that the thought and love in which the author puts into this book makes you truly feel like you will make it through...and then if you use the book correctly, YOU DO! I am going on the 3rd night of sleeping through the night and it's only been 3 weeks since we started this. Since the 3rd night we've only had 2 night wakings max and we don't ever have to take her out of the crib if we have to intervene. Using Pantley's suggestions she now loves her crib! It's wonderful!

I was desperate and at the end of my rope. This book was a blessing! I recommend it to everyone.

That's the word I would use to describe the book. With my second daughter (who was just as the first one a terrible sleeper) a health visitor suggested I "let her cry it out". The result was both of us crying haf the night and now almost two years on, she still is a horrible sleeper.

When I was pregnant with the little one, I read this book. We started the system when she was just three weeks old and she is a delight. She'll fall asleep on her own at night. When she wakes up for a feed, she'll drink, and go back to sleep.....just like that! No dummy's, no walking her to sleep, no endless crying, just blissfull sleep!

She is happy, content and well rested, and I'll be too....as soon as I teach my middle daughter to sleep ;-)
