This book is a great place to get started for those who want to go beyond investing through the usual path of buying mutual funds. It explains alternatives like stocks, bonds, ETFs, real estate, segregated funds and covers choices of advisors, brokers, types of accounts like RRSPs, LIRAs etc and the critical issue of fees and commissions. It is written in a straightforward, non-technical style and gives clear examples as well as links and references on where to get more info. The author is an investor herself and an unbiased source. She isn't shy of being critical at times e.g. in slamming Principal Protected Notes. There are sample portfolios to give tangible ideas on how it all can fit together. It would get five out of five stars if it didn't have a few things I disagree with - e.g. some support of market timing and technical analysis - but all in all this a really useful book where there are few worthwhile alternatives.
