Not Without My Daughter

by Betty Mahmoody, William Hoffer

St. Martin's Press | February 15, 1991 | Mass Market Paperbound

In August 1984, Michigan housewife Betty Mahmoody accompanied her husband to his native Iran for a two-week vacation. To her horror, she found herself and her four-year-old daughter, Mahtob, virtual prisoners of a man rededicated to his Shiite Moslem faith, in a land where women are near-slaves and Americans are despised. Their only hope for escape lay in a dangerous underground that would not take her child...

Now the true story of this courageous woman and her breathtaking odyssey bursts upon the screen in the Pathe Entertainment production starring Academy Award-winner Sally Field!

I read this book 15 years or so ago as a teenager, and loved it. It's hard to believe that this could happen to someone, but yet time and time again it does. Every couple years I pick this book up and re-read it.

This novel is a true story of the torment and hardships a mother had to go through to protect her child and it is so powerful. I found it hard to put this novel down and from the first page I was engrossed in the novel and characters. It is a gripping, fantastic read and it is in my top 3 favourite books.

'Not Without My Daughter', Betty Mahmoody's brutally true story about the startling captivity of herself and Mahtob by her own husband while on a trip to Iran, from which Mr. Mahmoody intended they never return, changed my outlook when I read it years ago.
Then, the plight of women struggling for basic freedoms in parts of the Middle East was little known - simply not a popular news item at the time.
Reading the facts in Betty's story, I felt total alarm, not only as though a prisoner myself, but a new sense of everyone's responsibility for guarding the rights of women living in the appalling conditions described in this book. In the years since, I've read the Quran, and all I can, about the lack of women's rights in certain Mid. Eastern areas, and I remain passionate; furious to do everything in my power to stop such nightmares from continuing, that someday we might equate the Mid.East with its unique positive traits instead of such afflicted women. All women should read this book.
