From Our Editors

Two preteen girls have the kind of friendship where nothing is too great a favour and no one will ever separate them. But can Annemarie and her Jewish friend Ellen survive the ravages of Nazi-controlled Copenhagen? At first, it seems nothing will stop the Third Reich from its steady onslaught. The Johansens take Ellen in and pretend she's their daughter, but anyone can tell by her dark hair she's no Aryan. Soon Annemarie realizes she will have to do something drastic to save the friendship - and Ellen's life. Number the Stars by Lois Lowry received the prestigious Newbery Medal.

From the Publisher

Ten-year-old Annemarie Johansen and her best friend Ellen Rosen often think of life before the war. It's now 1943 and their life in Copenhagen is filled with school, food shortages, and the Nazi soldiers marching through town. When the Jews of Denmark are "relocated," Ellen moves in with the Johansens and pretends to be one of the family. Soon Annemarie is asked to go on a dangerous mission to save Ellen's life.

Number The Stars is a heartening tale of the solidarity and love shared by a country and her countrymen, even whereby divergent religions could cause no fault. One of a Kind 5

This review is from: Number the Stars (Trade Paperback)

I usually don't enjoy books that center around the Germans vs. the Jews. However this book is so much more than that. I first read it in grade five, and countless times since then. This is a classic and definitely one of a kind!

2 Words. Historical Fiction. It sounds boring, but after reading the book, I really got a better understanding of the germans vs. the jews. It can be very interesting! Although, there are some parts that drags on, other than that, pure greatness!!!!
