I really liked this book. I loved the characters and loved the fact that they are aliens, it's so cool. I've never read another book with aliens in them and Jennifer made them very interesting. I felt like some action was missing, there was no action until the very end, when there could've been a bit more. She knows how to keep your attention nonetheless. Daemon is something special, you hate him, yet you love him and you wish something happens with Katy !!! Very good book, I really liked it and can't wait to see what happens in the next one :)

I was surprisingly...disappointed by this book. The previous reviews were all gushing in joy about this novel. It does have all the ingredients for a hit novel: ordinary heroine who moves into a small town, gorgeous male counterpart who is actually an alien (his name is "Daemon"), and then the bad aliens who are hunting down these good aliens. But that's the problem. This novel is so generic that I wanted to cry in despair because I actually bought it. First of all, the characters were not developed very well. Daemon is just a ripoff of Edward. He glows like Edward. He is gorgeous like Edward. He has otherworldly powers like Edward. I figured that wasn't enough for me to dislike him - I mean, if the author develops him well enough, I won't care about all of that superficial stuff. Sadly, his character development never continued past the superficial. I can sum up his personality in one sentence actually: he is a jerk to humans because he doesn't want the bad aliens to hurt them, but sometimes he's nice to the main character (Katy) because he likes her. Katy's characterization was a bit better than Daemon's. In the end, though, what brought her down was the fact that I did not understand how her relationship with Daemon became so serious. They seemed to have formed a deep bond, but their conversations basically just consist of: "you're a jerk Daemon," "yes, I know but sometimes I can be nice too," "I think you are smoking hot," "I'm an alien, let me tell you about us and the bad aliens," "I'll protect you." I didn't see this 'deep connection' that they had. Therefore, I did not see how their feelings for each other grew so strong. Now, speaking of these bad aliens, this is a major issue I have with this novel. They are characterized as evil, one-dimensional characters whose only goal is to destroy aliens like Daemon and suck out their powers. They don't care about humans and will kill them mercilessly if they get in their way. Writing about this type of villain is a cop-out because everyone naturally has to hate this type of merciless antagonist; we can't sympathize with them at all. Not everything is this black and white! Whether we like it or not, most villains don't do things without a reason. I can only hope Jennifer's next novel improves upon this aspect. And so, because these bad aliens are flat characters, the plot just falls flat on its face because it is so generic. I thought that this story would be more plot-driven given the summary, but that really isn't the case. Most of it is about how Daemon and Katy's relationship develops (which wasn't done very well anyway), then enemy aliens attack and Daemon has to reveal his secret to Katy. That is literally it...there are no twists or surprises. Now, this book isn't completely terrible because I did give it two stars rather than one. Jennifer Armentrout is very witty and has a way of making dialogue/inner monologues funny and relatable. My favourite lines from the book are: "Beautiful face. Beautiful body. Horrible attitude. It was the holy trinity of hot boys" and “My palms itched to have a close encounter of the b*tch-slap kind with his face." Sometimes it's easy to forget all of the problems this book has because you get caught up in the dialogue. But then you realize that the dialogue does not contain anything of substance, and that is a cold reality indeed. In conclusion, I think that Jennifer Armentrout has a lot of potential, but that she might be bogged down by trying to imitate popular YA fiction. She is very witty and has a knack for dialogue, now she just needs to work on directing her dialogue a bit more to improve character development. She definitely needs to work on creating a more riveting plot. Therefore, if there was one word I would use to describe this novel, it would be generic. I think I would only recommend this book for people looking for a quick romance. TOO LONG DIDN'T READ VERSION Pros: - Witty and funny dialogue - Romantic Cons - Flat characters - The feelings between the two main characters did not develop from meaningful interactions - The "bad guys" are entirely one-dimensional heartless beings with seemingly no motive but to kill the "good aliens" - The plot was very bland and simple. What happens when you have an ordinary girl move from the big city to a small town and moves next door to aliens?...... A whole lot of AWESOME. I loved this book I thought the story and the characters were fantastic. I also have to give my props to Jennifer for taking a supernatural creature that I think no other YA author has tried and made it interesting. I liked that right out of the gate the story kicks off, Katy was great and I liked how she handled all the situations that were thrown at her including Daemon who was total jerk to her right from the first meeting and speaking of how can you not fall to the ground like a puddle of goo when Daemon gives you the smirk, I will admit he is a jerk but he had his really sweet moments as well and I look forward to what happens in there relationship. And even though not a whole lot happens plot wise for the book she wrote it in such a way where your constantly flipping chapters. Again the concept of aliens doesn't get used often especially in the Paranormal romance genre for YA where it's rules with vampires,angels and werewolves, don't get me wrong I love all those creatures but it's nice to see a new spice thrown in the mixing bowl. Overall the book was fantastic I really enjoyed it, the characters were very interesting and had me addicted to the pages and the story itself was amazing, I highly recommend you check this book out. :0)

By the time I found this series, Shadows(the prequel) was already released and I read it before this one. Because of that I came into Obsidian knowing about Daemon's past and the loss of his brother Dawson. I don't know why it took me so long to finally read this book, maybe I was nervous about it not living up to the hype, but instead it exceeded it. It's aliens, something not seen a lot of in today's craze of vampires, werewolves, and fairies. I love aliens. From Rosswell to ET to Doctor Who. They're fascinating and the Luxen are no different. Katy moves next door to the Black family after her mother decides she needs a fresh start, away from all the memories of her late father. Katy's first encounter with Daemon doesn't go well, with her knocking on his door for directions, him answering shirtless, and a rude exchange. At the store, Katy meets Daemon's twin sister Dee and, despite Daemon's disapproval, the two become friends and because of Dee, Daemon and Katy start spending time together. Jennifer L Armentrout has this amazing way of taking things that usually annoy me and seamlessly making them fit into the plot. The relationship between Katy and Daemon is more hate than love for most of the book, and every time Katy thinks that maybe, just maybe, Daemon is showing some feelings toward her, he pushes her away. Getting close to humans is dangerous for the Luxen, and for the humans, and he's really just trying to protect everyone the only way he knows how. Katy proves to be a strong young woman, refusing to back away from a friendship with Dee on Daemon's say-so and even when her feelings are hurt by Daemon, she doesn't become an incoherent mess. She fights back. I still want, need, to know what happened to Daemon and Dee's brother Dawson. And I wouldn't mind finding out more about Dee's boyfriend Adam, another alien who lives with siblings Andrew and Ash, who seem to be the mean characters of the series so far. Poor guy.

WOW am still in shock of how great this book is!! Jennifer L. Armentrout has really got the great stuff, she has Half-Blood which I also LOVED, and now Obsidian which is out of this world!! Let me just say that it was hard writing this review. I am not gonna spoil anything! I have also fallen in love with another character by the name of Daemon... oh Daemon. Is it just me or any others who have just enjoyed him. Katy is one lucky girl!! (need to find Hot Alien Boy) I 3 Jennifer and Liz + Entangled Publishing. This book deserves 20x stars!! My emotions were everywhere throughout the entire book. One moment there was scenes that were soo intense that I wanted to yell at Daemon or Katy (all in a good way). This book has romance and action. I was practically jumping up and down during some of the scenes.Action packed,out of this world, romantic, and hot boys. Daemon maybe an alien but he is on HOT alien with awesome powers. Dee his sister does play an important role in the novel, she is very popular, she wants to be normal and she can do that with Katy. I really enjoyed the plot of the book, the characters personalities, Daemon's infuriating passion to annoy Katy, and how their personal relationship develops throughout the book. I personally loved his character, him and Katy are opposites but they fit perfectly together. It was a sizzling, romantic read, and I could read it over and over again. I kept being told that this was a great book but couldn't see a book about Aliens being that good... Boy was i wrong!!! My friend got me to read this and i am so glad she did. I could not put it down once i started!! You just can't wait to read what is going to happen next with the relationship between Katy and Daemon. It is so very well written. I loved it!!! A MUST read!

Daemon. Bad boy and he knows it. I can understand why her head is so confused and her body just wants to give in. There is definitely enough heat in this book to make you want to stand in front of an open fridge while reading it. I knew I was going to like this book from the moment he opened the door. Actually I take that back. The first chapter she speaks about how she has a blog and how her mother just doesn’t understand her love of books. She was preaching to the choir over here. Right about there I was like “I love it. Sold.” Then, when I started to really get further into it and my eyes were dodging back and forth over all the banter and pent up tension between Katy and Daemon I wanted to put the book down, start a slow clap and just say “Good for you.” Some of it was for Katy not putting up with his crap and sometimes it was for Jennifer L. Armentrout having created some seriously awesome characters who so obviously need to be together, but at the same time you can’t get enough of their bickering. Obsidian pulls you into your own word and questions the reality of Alien and their existence and make you question, like I Am Number whether or not we would actually know of their existence and what they would really do if they came here. If they were all as hot as Daemon I would say come right on over. I would actually hold the runway lights waving in their space ships attempting to direct traffic. She write up a pretty world…one that I wouldn’t mind being a part of. Good: Katy: mainly because she sticks up for herself, her friends and she knows how to throw one mean bowl of spaghetti. Dee: she reminds me of an Alice character. She’s innocent, nice and just wants to be friends with Katy. I hope she gets a happy ending and meets someone she really likes Daemon: Obviously hot and he knows it. Complete ass. But knows how to flirt, get his way and has abs you want to rub up against and eyes you would like to melt into. Bad: There wasn’t really anything bad about this book. You do however have to pay close attention to everything otherwise you might get confused or miss something. Overall (Writing style, story line, and general): Overall I loved her characters. I loved the story line (refreshing from the Angels, Demons, and witches and whatnot that I am use to). I lover her comedy and humor and that she wasn’t afraid to make Katy some character would can throw around a mean middle finger and walk away with her dignity. The only thing I would say is that during the climatic end I wasn’t 100% sure what was going on. You never know, maybe I wasn’t suppose to, but I was confused by the description and ended up just stumbling over it and letting it work itself out. Still something I’m keeping on my shelf and something you should add to yours. One to curl up with next to a nice cold freezer while you fan yourself. This book is intriguing and hard to put down. I have to admit that I am not a huge reader but this book captivated me and got me hooked. I read it in a day. It is easy to follow and left me wanting more page after page. It is a GREAT read and I would recommend it to everyone. This book brought in love, intrigue, lust, friendship, and desire. A teenage girl moves to a new town and tries to befriend the neighbours. She is met by an arrogant male, who later plays hot and cold with her. One minute he is swoon worthy and the next he is arrogant and stand-offish. This appeals to and deters Kat all at the same time. His sister however becomes Kat's best friend. It is a real love/hate relationship with the kids next door. But are they really kids? You will have to read to find out all the fascinating, captivating details. This book is definitely read worthy. I have only chose to read a handful of books in the last 10 years and this makes one of the top 5.

I’m a huge science fiction fan and alien’s are always so prominent in science fiction. For me aliens hit a high note with the X-Files in the 90’s, and another probably less known alien based tv show called Roswell - this one in particular is a dead ringer for Obsidian. But for a while there I think female teenagers equated aliens to be these slime covered green weird looking guys associated with greasy basement dwelling nerds, conspiracy theorists and a subject to be avoided in general, rather than a subject with high entertainment value. As it is, aliens aren’t very prominent as YA novel topics, I can’t think of any others, can you? So I’m going to start here by applauding Armentrout for successfully bringing a not commonly tread subject so successfully to life in the YA category because Obsidian was that freaking awesome. Both the new and old cover feature the now famous (and real life couple) Pepe as Daemon with strikingly eerie green eyes and Sztella as the absolutely gorgeous Katy. Although I do like the old cover version more since we actually get to see Sztella’s face. When the story starts we’re introduced to Katy, who is the new girl in the one horse town of Ketterman in West Virginia. We get a quick run down of who she is, and what she’s doing there. What I really enjoyed was Armentrout’s nod to the book blogging community by making Katy a book blogger herself, and inserting the little joys of book blogging such as memes and the excitement of books in the mail. Initially Katy is a quiet person who is more reserved and prefers the company of books, but when looking through her perspective you can see that she’d really like to change that and with this determination in mind she decides to go out into the world to meet new people… and what better place to start than with her neighbours? Upon reading the first 5 pages…and as soon as we meet Daemon in his completely necessary state of undress I was hooked and I couldn’t put it down until it was done a few hours later. Armentrout’s style of writing is casual, upbeat, deliciously detailed and she writes some of the sharpest dialogue that I’ve seen in a while . It all works together in perfect harmony to create rich characters, settings, tense action scenes and the aura of mystery surrounding the aliens. Katy’s character is easy enough to follow along, she’s smart with a healthy dose of skeptical (I mean aliens really? :D) but when things get weird she notices and when the truth comes out she at least accepts it with some fascination instead of running off in hysterics. What I thoroughly enjoyed was watching this struggle between shy Katy and a more bold Katy that wants to take the challenge of Daemon head on and how she eventually forms into a stronger unified Katy that I’m so excited to see in the sequel Onyx! Oh Daemon…I’m pretty sure anyone syllabically named in relation to Daemon (I’m looking at you Damon Salvatore from The Vampire Diaries, specifically the TV version) is destined to be a dark, broodingly hot, with a wicked sense of humour but infuriating character that is lethal to the bone and is doggedly determined to protect his family no matter the cost to anyone else. That extreme loyalty is what gets me every time, no matter how much of an ass they are at every turn I end up absolutely head over heels loving the character because I love seeing the flashes of good and badass as the situations progress and aren’t these types of guys just more interesting than a perfectly good boy? The secondary characters provided such a well rounded support cast, from Dee’s adorable longing for friends, to Katy’s mom - who probably is the coolest mom ever, to highly entertaining jealous catty girls, gossip fuelled townies and dangerous villain’s that will have you looking around in hopes of finding Men in Black, or a hot alien to save you. I loved how Armentrout crafted every detail to a purpose, with seemingly small things that explode back into your face as a huge secret in the overall plot. She’s also got the alien explanation rationalizing to humans down to a science, and I bow down to her sexual tension mastery - she takes these two right up to the edge of a cliff, pushes them over and at the last second grabs them and saves their lives, the rush is both infuriating and addictive. The explanations for the aliens, and their abilities were corny I thought at first, but Armentrout does an amazing job weaving an intricate story web, and making these aliens believable to me through some heart stopping action scenes. What I do know for certain is that at the end of Obsidian I was having serious Daemon withdrawal issues (and still am) and all I want is to get a hold of Onyx to see what happens next!
