Odd Thomas

by Dean Koontz

Random House Publishing Group | October 26, 2004 | Mass Market Paperbound

"The dead don''t talk. I don''t know why." But they do try to communicate, with a short-order cook in a small desert town serving as their reluctant confidant. Odd Thomas thinks of himself as an ordinary guy, if possessed of a certain measure of talent at the Pico Mundo Grill and rapturously in love with the most beautiful girl in the world, Stormy Llewellyn. Maybe he has a gift, maybe it's a curse, Odd has never been sure, but he tries to do his best by the silent souls who seek him out. Sometimes they want justice, and Odd's otherworldly tips to Pico Mundo''s sympathetic police chief, Wyatt Porter, can solve a crime. Occasionally they can prevent one. But this time it''s different.

A mysterious man comes to town with a voracious appetite, a filing cabinet stuffed with information on the world''s worst killers, and a pack of hyena-like shades following him wherever he goes. Who the man is and what he wants, not even Odd's deceased informants can tell him. His most ominous clue is a page ripped from a day-by-day calendar for August 15.

Today is August 14.

In less than twenty-four hours, Pico Mundo will awaken to a day of catastrophe. As evil coils under the searing desert sun, Odd travels through the shifting prisms of his world, struggling to avert a looming cataclysm with the aid of his soul mate and an unlikely community of allies that includes the King of Rock ''n'' Roll. His account of two shattering days when past and present, fate and destiny converge is the stuff of our worst nightmares-and a testament by which to live: sanely if not safely, with courage, humor, and a full heart that even in the darkness must persevere.

    Odd Thomas Forever

This is one of Dean Koontz's favorite characters because Odd Thomas is a unique man with a special gift. I fell in love with Odd after only a few pages into this book it drew me in so quickly. Odd is certainly very witty throughout the book and he is now also one of my favorite characters to date. Certainly a great read will have to pick up the other Odd Thomas books so I continue to read about this special character.

    Terrible

On several occasions I have tried to pick up books out of Dean Koontz's ever-expanding literary arsenal. I could only assume that the one book that would prove his genius to me would be Odd Thomas, since it now has three sequels. If this book is Koontz's masterpiece, then my suggestion is to avoid him at all costs. The story is plagued with awkward similies and tangential comparisons. It's as though the author just decided that every comparison that came into his head at the time of writing was literary gold. This book is frustrating to read, don't waste your time.

I didn't expect to like this one as much as I did ... i loved it ... the big reveal - I knew it was coming - but still it was an emotional reveal.

If you like the Jeff Linsay Dexter series - you'd like this!

    Quick Read

while I am not a avid reader it takes a lot to get me interested in a book, however Odd Thomas roped me in within the first chapter, giving me a reason to keep me reading. The book moves quickly and has very little downtime if any. There is always something of interest and the chapters are quick and plentiful which I feel makes the reading go by quicker. Odd Thomas is a 20 yr living in Pico Mundo a small California desert town. Odd lives up to his name by having that sixth sense one in the same as the movie of the same name. Odd feels something big is about to happen in his town and he must stop it from occuring. I won't ruin the end, but believe me, avid readers will whisk through this one within days. It took me about 8 hours of reading to finish this 450 page book, and it was a delite from beginning to end. A must read!
