One Is Canada

by Maxine Trottier
Illustrator: Bill Slavin

Harper Collins | January 15, 2000 | Trade Paperback

One Is Canada is a counting book with a difference. One to ten become more than numbers -- each one is a celebration of Canada, its land and its people, its culture and its heritage.

Defining Canadian geography while at the same time introducing the First Peoples and the Group of Seven is no small feat, and Maxine Trottier and Bill Slavin accomplish this with a sense of delight and wonder, each lyrical stanza and colorful, energetic illustration building to an unabashed, multicultural celebration of our identity.

One Is Canada is not just a counting book for pre-schoolers. It's a book for teachers, parents, librarians -- and children of all ages. Plus, it has an added Notes on Canada section that gives readers more details on each stanza and illustration, a feature sure to stimulate curiosity and learning.

I was in the school library with my Girl Guide troop and I happened on this book, so I picked it up and read it. It's awesome! It has great information on Canada and it's not so intense that the information would be wasted on a younger child. The illustrations are terrific, big, and bright. I ordered it for my daughter and she's only 6 months old, even she loved the colours of the pictures.

I recently read this book to my 5 year old. She was captivated by its illustrations and simply poetry, as was I. A fabulously written and illustrated introduction into our nation, its people and its heritage, thru the use of numbers and flowing poetry. I would recommend this as a hardcover book you would treasure in your family library for generations!
