One is Canada

by Maxine Trottier

Harper Collins Canada | February 15, 1999 | Hardcover

Read it. Chant it. Sing it. Celebrate it! Once you've read "One Is Canada", counting to ten will never be the same. In a singularly brilliant idea, award-winning author Maxine Trottier and acclaimed illustrator Bill Slavin have teamed up to create a counting picture book that will entertain, teach-and delight-all Canadians.

In a book characterized by both energy and elegance, Maxine Trottier and Bill Slavin manage to define Canadian geography, introduce the First Peoples and the Group of Seven, show how ten provinces join to create one country-all in a read-aloud experience that's pure enjoyment.

Each lyrical stanza builds upon the previous one. Each illustration captures Canada on a grand and awe-inspiring scale yet, rich with whimsical details, gives kids a zoom-lens view that will encourage questions and discussion. Gathering momentum, One Is Canada lifts off the page in an unabashed celebration of a land, its heritage, culture and people.

Detailed "Notes on Canada" at the end of the book provide the perfect launching pad for discussion, instruction and further exploration.

I was in the school library with my Girl Guide troop and I happened on this book, so I picked it up and read it. It's awesome! It has great information on Canada and it's not so intense that the information would be wasted on a younger child. The illustrations are terrific, big, and bright. I ordered it for my daughter and she's only 6 months old, even she loved the colours of the pictures.
