From the Publisher

On a Monday morning in April, a middle-aged writer finds a woman standing in front of the fig tree in her living room. The woman is wearing a navy blue trench coat and white Nikes, and is carrying a small black suitcase. She is the Virgin Mary and, she explains, after 2,000 years of petition, adoration and travel, she is in need of some R&R.

In Our Lady of the Lost and Found, Diane Schoemperlen has created a profound and original novel that captures the hearts and imagination of readers. Now available with a P.S. section featuring insightful background material, this captivating story is an exploration of our capacity for faith and of the miracles of daily life.

About the Author

DIANE SCHOEMPERLEN is the author of Forms of Devotion, which won the 1998 Governor General?s Award for Fiction; In the Language of Love, which was chosen by Toronto Star critic Philip Marchand as one of the year?s 10 best novels; and Our Lady of the Lost and Found, her most recent national bestseller. She has also written six short story collections, including The Man of My Dreams, which was nominated for the Governor General?s Award for Fiction and a Trillium Book Award. She lives in Kingston, Ontario, with her son.

From the Critics

"Isn't it just delightful to see an artist produce something you never could have thought possible? Especially when it is done with such artful ease that it looks perfectly natural."
-Books in Canada

"A clever hybrid of religious fairy tale and straight-up spiritual inquest, this visitation of the Blessed Virgin is above all a holy hoot."
-Elle

"...genuinely heartbreaking..."
-The Globe and Mail

"...a lively, whimsical yet thoughtful look at life and its continual vagaries, from one of the country's most original writers."
-London Free Press

    Spiritual Fact and Fiction 4

This review is from: Our Lady Of The Lost And Found: A Novel (Hardcover)

It's been a number of years since I've read this book but I do remember going on about it and making recommendations to friends and relatives. I thought my mother in law in particular, would definitely enjoy this novel. Unfortunately, her eyesight is failing her and she can no longer read a conventional style book. I keep checking back in hopes that “Our Lady of the Lost and Found” will be released to CD, no luck so far but I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

Love the blessed Virgin and the book 5

Being a good catholic lad, I found Our Lady of The Lost and Found funny-sad-educational and very well investigated by Ms.Schoemperlen. knowing her and the penchance she has for opening her door for the beleagured and downcast-what a great treat this would have been for this lady, if the story was true and not fiction. For the love shown for our Blessed Virgin, Diane opened my heart and eyes to my preferred religion and church, once more. Thank you

    Sublime! 5

This review is from: Our Lady Of The Lost And Found: A Novel (Hardcover)

Unlike other Canadian novels of its genre, Our Lady of the Lost and Found is a profound and quietly affecting gem that does not produce ennui or restlessness. Despite her critics, Schoemperlen produces an entrancing tale which begins with a window to a writer’s solitary yet comfortable life and routine in Anyville, North America (although the author betrays her Canadian roots at the outset of the novel) and leads to a series of spiritually sumptuous moments that begin with the arrival of the… read more

    Great!! 4

I read this book and, from the beginning, loved the words, the images. It was wonderful to "meet" the Virgin Mary, the woman. At times, you can't help wondering if the story was true or fiction. Beautifully written. I've lent it to many people since. I would love to read more books by this author.

    Major Disappointment 1

This review is from: Our Lady Of The Lost And Found: A Novel (Hardcover)

The premise of the book sounded really great but about a third of the way through, I put it down. Every second chapter covers the history of Mary's appearances. BORING. What a disappointing book.

Don't Bother With This One 1

This review is from: Our Lady Of The Lost And Found: A Novel (Hardcover)

I put the book away when I was half way through. It started off well, but be warned - after the first few chapters, every second chapter is a long boring narrative of all the sightings of the Virgin.

    A very original read 5

This review is from: Our Lady Of The Lost And Found: A Novel (Hardcover)

When I first read the inside flap of this book, I knew I was in for an original, insightful and hopefully spiritual read. 'Our Lady' did not disappoint on any level. The personification of Mary in modern times was both brilliant and inspirational. The knowledge that we all strive for those peaceful corners in the universe where we can relax, reflect, regenerate, and finally proceed with our daily lives. For some of us it means balancing work, family and friends. For others it means performing… read more
