Peas and Thank You: Simple Meatless Meals the Whole Family Will Love

by Sarah Matheny

HARLEQUIN | July 26, 2011 | Trade Paperback

Over 85 Recipeas, One Very Happy Family

When Sarah Matheny, creator of the popular blog Peas and Thank You, decided to eliminate animal products from her diet, she knew there'd be skeptics. Her husband was raised on the standard American diet. Her grandpa was a butcher. Her mom was the best home cook around, with a generous pat of butter here and a crumble of bacon there. But now Sarah is a mom who wants to feed her children right.

Out went the diet soda. In came the smoothies.

Out went the "nutrition" bars. In came the nutritious cookies.

Out went a tired, caffeine–fueled mom. In came Mama Pea.

Peas and Thank You is a collection of recipes and stories from a mainstream family eating a not–so–mainstream diet. Filled with healthy and delicious versions of foods we've all grown up enjoying, but with a Mama Pea twist—no meat, lots of fresh ingredients and plenty of nutrition for growing Peas. From wholesome breakfasts to mouth–watering desserts, there's plenty here to satisfy the pickiest Peas in your life. It's easier than ever to whip up crowd–pleasing meals that will have the whole family asking for, "more, Peas."

Based on one of my all time favorite blogs, Peas and Thank You: Meatless Meals the Whole Family Will Love, is now the top cookbook in my collection! After becoming a reader of Sarah's blog over a year ago I have become much more adventurous in the kitchen in terms of meatless meals. Although I am not vegetarian or vegan, my family and I do enjoy eating a few meatless meals a week and the ones from Sarah's blog and this book are definately the ones I turn to! I haven't made a recipe of Mama Pea's that I didn't like! I 120% recommend this book to anyone looking to move to a meatless diet, and even to those who aren't, but are just looking for something a little different or a new twist on a 'old favorite'. This book is quirky, witty, cute and real. Plus the photography and colors are amazing and really show what the finished product looks like- and it looks YUMMY! I love that it's a recipe book you can actually read! I suggest this book and I suggest checking out Peas and Thank You the blog ASAP!!

    Delicious 'recipeas' and funny stories!

I absolutely loved this cookbook. Not only are the 'recipeas' really delicious (I haven't tried one that isn't a 'keeper' yet) but blogger Sarah added personal stories before each recipe and she is FUNNY. I found myself reading the cookbook from beginning to end just for her stories. The recipes are all meatless and so tasty--these are recipes for EVERYONE, if you eat meat or not. I made a bunch for my meat-eating husband and he loved them. I highly recommend this book! GET IT! Her blog is pretty awesome too, with a bunch of recipes on there as well (http://peasandthankyou.com/).

I found the Peas and Thank you website a few months ago now and have loved every bit of it. Then when I found out Mama Pea was releasing a book I got even more excited. We have all been counting down the days until the release and its definitely been worth the wait. This book is amazing!!! I love the stories, tips and I am going to try ALL, yes all, of the recipes!! The pictures are stunning especially of her 2 sweet little peas (daughters), they are absolutely adorable. I would definitely recommended this book to anyone who is vegan/vegetarian or even just for those of you who are trying out Meatless Mondays.
Thank you Mama Pea for such a wonderful book, you truly are an inspiration!!!!!!!!

From the Critics

"Peas and Thank You is a wonderfully accessible cookbook designed to help kids learn to love veggies from day one. But recipes for things like Thai Veggie Burgers and Spicy African Peanut Soup aren''t what I''d call ' kid food''- just good food."
