The Petty Details of So-and-So's Life

by Camilla Gibb

Doubleday Canada | July 30, 2002 | Hardcover

With her second novel, The Petty Details of So-and-so's Life, award-winning and celebrated author Camilla Gibb probes the bruises of family with humanity, hilarity, and a keen eye for the grotesque to deliver one of the most anticipated books of the year.

A startling and ambitious novel, as funny as it is poignant, The Petty Details of So-and-so's Life tells the story of Blue and Emma Taylor, who, despite an almost telepathic connection, respond to the sudden disappearance of their explosive father in remarkably different ways. Emma sets off in pursuit of a new family, and discovers a sense of belonging in the most unexpected places. Burly, tattoo-stamped Blue, haunted by the brutal, disparaging voice of their father, embarks on a cross-country search for the elusive parent. Emma and Blue share a most intimate connection, one forged in the secret worlds and wordless communications of childhood. As they grow, they discover the limits of the language they share.

Camilla Gibb's debut novel, Mouthing the Words, won the 2000 City of Toronto Book Award, and has been published in twelve countries. Camilla is one of two Canadian authors named to the Orange Futures List, compiled by the Orange Prize jury to celebrate twenty-one promising writers to watch in the new century.

Without sounding snobbish, this is a book for less-sophisticated readers. It has the zany characters and outlandish situations that'll attract you, but its plot crumbles under the slightest criticism. Maybe that's Gibb's fault--I blame her editor. Everyone in the book seems to do things immediately and covertly--get married, move in, move out, sleep with kindly waitresses, get through highschool and into a good university. And we can't always figure out how or why. Gibb seems focused on making things weird. Why can't she take a minute and delete the cutesy cliches/cliched characters that mar this novel? Again, her editor has done an abysmal job.
Prose-wise, this novel is okay. I can't believe Gibb gets away with stacking adjectives, but everything reads fine as long as she's not trying to uncover some deep human paradox via sentence fragments.

I largely agree, though I found the characters of Emma and Blue slightly more endearing than you did. This book tries to be deep, but has no depth. And I'm still trying to figure out what the heck the point was supposed to be. I didn't take very much from this, other than empathy for the main characters. And what was with that final "postcard from hell"? Made absolutely no sense, and further marred an already clunky ending.

This author has the ability to create
characters with raw emotions and gives a
window into the minds of everyday people. I
    identified with the main characters
childhood bond and their quest to maintain it
into their adult years. This book is full of
wisdom. It contained many phrases that will
one day become famous quotes. Read this
book. My only complaint is that it had to
end - it left me wanting more.

While not quite as good as her first novel Mouthing the Words, Camilla Gibb's second novel, The Petty Details of So-and-So's Life is entirely a worthwhile read. At times the content is incredibly depressing but Gibb maintains a delicate treatment of interpersonal relationships combined with an objective representation of the human psyche that provides an engaging read that shouldn't be passed on by fans of her first novel.

From the Critics

"Suggestive of Wilde at his spirited best . . . Gibb's narrative leaves you poised - sometimes within a single sentence - between laughter and heartbreak." - The Globe and Mail

Praise for Mouthing the Words:

"Mouthing the Words rings with an authority rarely found in first novels. By dint of Gibb's lush, visceral prose, Mouthing the Words persuasively charts one woman's journey back to wholeness." - The Washington Post

"Gibb's debut novel is both gut-wrenching and gut-busting. Ridiculously good for a first novel." - NOW Magazine

"Gibb scales her story small, twists her sentences into prickly, unsentimental assaults and ends up with a portrait of terrible, comic humanity." - The New York Times
