Phantom In The Night

by SHERRILYN KENYON

Simon & Schuster | October 6, 2010 | Hardcover

In New York Times bestselling author Sherrilyn Kenyon''s thrilling novel of romantic suspense, a gutsy female agent from the Bureau of American Defense encounters an elusive killer who isn''t at all what he seems.

After losing her mother to a vigilante killer, Terri Mitchell has dedicated her life to justice. Working covertly as a new agent for the Bureau of American Defense agency, she''s consulting with the New Orleans Police Department to bust an organized crime ring suspected of funding terrorism. But when rumors surface of a phantom ghost terrorizing and killing the very people she''s investigating, she''s suspicious.

Nathan Drake has spent his life protecting his family, the only thing that matters to him...until the most feared drug lord in the southeast takes everything Nathan holds dear. Now he''s a man on a mission with nothing to lose. He figures he only needs to stay alive long enough to protect the innocent lives the killers are out to destroy.

As the two of them seek a similar goal by different means, Terri and Nathan are drawn deep into an evil underbelly that cuts through all levels of society. Now two people who have no reason to trust must trust in each other or die. And if they die, a deadly attack will be unleashed on thousands of innocent people.

This book wasn't bad, there just is nothing noteworthy about it. In fact, less than a week after reading it, I'm struggling to remember what it was even about or how it ended. Not exactly a glowing review. Bought it off the sale table, not sure if it was even worth the sale price. I guess I must have been entertained but I would definitely call this a beach read. Read it and forget it, wouldn't cry if I dropped in the lake.

This is a great book that combines romance and action, and all untangled (or tangled) for the reader as a mystery ride. I must admit that it took a while for the phantom to finally reveal his identity, but it was a page turner nonetheless. What happened in chapters 1, 2, and 3 were unexpected, so I had to read what was going to happen next. This book kept me up and awake for many hours of which I should have been sleeping.

I personally like how both Sherrilyn Kenyon and Dianna Love have collaborated on such a great story. I hope they do so again.

    Not Bad

When an author has many current series on the go, it's usually a long wait for the next novel. I was looking forward to reading this one and now that I've read it, it was a little disappointing. I didn't find it up to par with her DH series (those are hot!).
Here, there's a little action, a little romance all in the name of vengeance. The characters were okay, not too strong. She's stubborn, which usually does not bode well; he's ex-Special Ops so at least he knows what he's doing. Usual storyline, good guys beat out the bad guys. However, even the good guys don't always catch all the bad guys. That usually means it might make an appearance in another book. This really rated a lukewarm 2.5 stars for me. After this book, I'm not going to expect too much from Joe & Tee's story.

    Almost Perfect!

So where do I begin? I adored Terri and Nathan, their passion for justice, their lines between right and wrong, including the grey areas. I think they balance each other perfectly.

Terri is stubborn, has a mind of her own, with something to prove, I think more for herself and anyone else. She pushes herself, even when she should be taking a break. She believes vehemently in right and wrong.

Nathan wants to find the person who killed his brother. While his is a sort of vigilante justice, something Terri abhors, he isn't killing anyone. He's saving that for the one person who actually pulled the trigger.

What I liked was the spice between them, the electicity spiked the second they were together, even when neither knew who or what the other was.

Lots of action and suspense, with a little romance mixed in. An excellent mix. The plot seemed a little far-fetched to me, but still doable, and the ending has an unresolved issure that has me wondering if it will be part of the next plot.

This is what I found different: While there is usually lots of interaction between all agents of the B.A.D., there was hardly any here. Very little laughs when usually there's quite a bit. It was almost like the author didn't really know the characters. And that has me wondering… There's a co-author to this, something I haven't seen Sherri do before, not on one of her own stories. And I wonder if it was the co-author who wrote most of it. While I really hate to admit that, because I adore the series, that's the feel I'm getting. Not to say that's a bad thing, don't get me wrong. It just didn't have the same feel as the other B.A.D. stories. I've never read, nor have I heard, of Dianna Love Snell, so I don't know what her writing style is like, so I can't fault her.

While I thoroughly enjoyed this, I can't give it my usual 5-star rating. And that doesn't sit well with me. This novel was well past a year overdue - I think it's actually closer to two. The next novel is supposed to be Joe and Tee's story and it should have been out by now. I know she's really busy with her DH series (which I can't get enough of), and her other series' as well, and I'm hoping the next one doesn't have a co-author. Joe and Tee deserve more of her attention. If not, I'm really scared that the B.A.D. series is going to suffer.
