Phil Gordon's Little Green Book: Lessons and Teachings in No Limit Texas Hold'em

by Phil Gordon
Introduction by: Howard Lederer, Annie Duke

Gallery Books | October 4, 2005 | Hardcover

Phil Gordon plays poker with the best players in the world. He has won -- and lost -- in tournaments and cash games around the globe, all the while studying the game and learning from every hand dealt. As the resident expert and cohost of Celebrity Poker Showdown, Phil has quickly become one of the most sought-after teachers of No Limit Texas Hold''em. It''s a tough game. But anyone can become a winning player with the right amount of courage, patience, aggression, observation, and, perhaps most important, dedication to becoming a better player.

After fifteen years of keeping notes on the things he''s learned, the greats he''s played with, and the celebrities he''s taught, Phil Gordon has poured every single thing he knows about No Limit Texas Hold''em into this little green book. Taking a page from Harvey Penick''s bestselling book of golf wisdom, Phil plays the role of both teacher and student, offering up insightful tips on how to think about poker and how to develop a singular style of play. Through philosophy, psychology, strategy, math, and the knowledge gleaned from playing poker with everyone from T. J. Cloutier and Phil Ivey to Hank Azaria and Ben Affleck, Phil breaks down the game into enlightening instructional tidbits and illustrative anecdotes that inspire the kind of persistence and motivation necessary to improve your game.

A book to rank with Doyle Brunson''s Super System and David Sklansky''s The Theory of Poker, Phil Gordon''s Little Green Book deserves a spot on the shelf of every serious student of the game.

This book is part of a trio of books that Phil Gordon (one of the TALLEST poker players around) wrote a few years back. I met Phil at the Hospitality Suite in Binions back when FullTiltPoker was being launched (also met Chris Ferguson there ) and he is one of the few poker players I literally have to look up to. I am six foot two and Phil must be over six foot four ... but I digress ... this book reflects the way Phil Gordon approaches poker: Straight math with technique.

I recommend this to anyone wanting to get a good grounding in No Limit play. The key feature of this book is it is readable for adults. Complex ideas for beginners like pot odds and sandwich plays are simplified.

Phil has obviously taken the time to not only write a great book, but has proofread it extensively, so that in the middle of the book you have references to earlier subjects, reinforcing key ideas. This is a tangible advantage for someone learning to play. The book does *not* talk down to you (unlike a book by "the other Phil" currently residing as ashes in my fireplace )

It is hardcover ... something I really appreciate in a poker book.

I like the way Phil approaches Pot Odds, a difficult subject for beginners. This book is primarily oriented to be used as a 'basics refresher course' by regular players. It's readability and the humour throughout makes it a solid book to have in your poker library and it's sectional layout makes it a super (small) to take on a plane or train commute.

This is the perfect Xmas book for the nephew or niece this Christmas and even if you are not a beginner, it deserves a space in your poker library, if only to loan to a friend in time.
