Pirates!

by REES CELIA

Bloomsbury U.K. | August 14, 2008 | Hardcover

The destinies of two young women and the adventures they face when they take control of their pre-arranged lives are described in this compelling story. Set in the West Indies during the 18th century, this first-person narrative brings the past vividly to life as it chronicles the actions of the two girls. One is a slave forced to work in a plantation mansion and subjected to terrible cruelty by the plantation manager. The other is a spirited and rebellious English girl sent to the West Indies to marry well and combine the wealth of two respectable families.

Fate intervenes one night when the two girls save each other and run away to a dangerous new life as pirates. In this new guise they roam the seas, fight pitched battles against their foes and become embroiled in many exciting adventures.

Swashbuckling adventure, great female lead characters and a romantic historical setting combine to make Pirates! a certain bestseller.

    "A pirates life for me!"

Celia Rees never disappoints. A swashbuckling good time to be had mates. She takes real life history and spins a yarn so captivating I didn't want to put it down. A young girl who finds love, herself, the strength and courage to do the right thing all while she bucks society norms. In a time when women were considered possessions and slavery was not only acceptable but business as usual. A female pirate was down right unnatural... I loved how Celia Rees gave Nancy integrity. Even being a pirate (essentially a criminal) you can still do the right thing. Thanks Celia for this wonderful novel. The notes at the end with questions awesome idea for homeschoolers and regular schools - wish they had stories like this when I was growing up.

I should say first that I am a very fast reader. Books are like water to me. However, when reading Pirates! I had to actually slow myself down so as to savour Minerva and Nancy's travels for as long as possible. Of course I had to begin reading this book in the middle of finals, when it was particularly hard to keep from wondering what was to happen next in the middle of reviewing sexual and asexual reproduction. Pirates! is one of those books where you get to the end but there is no real ending which I both love and hate because it kind of ruins the whole book for you if the end isn't what you'd like it to be and so you can imagine your own. However it can be so very infuriating!!! All in all this is definately a book you should read it you like pirate stories, stories about the time before the twentieth century or just stories about a girl or two who do more than is expected of them -- and do it dressed as men!

I had to read this book for a book report and I must say, this is by far the best book I have read all year. It is filled with Romance, Adventure, Suspence, and Sadness. I loved everything about the book from the unlikey friendship to the ultimate test on love. I would reccomend this book to anyone! Celia did an absolutly fabulous job writing this book!
