Places Lost: In Search of Newfoundland's Resettled Communities

by Scott Walden

LYNX IMAGES | June 1, 2003 | Trade Paperback

During the summer of 1998 Scott Walden travelled to the sites of Newfoundland's resettled communities, photographing their physical remnants with his large- and medium-format cameras.  These photographs, collectively entitled Unsettled, have been exhibited at the Art Gallery of Newfoundland and Labrador (fall 2001) and the Cambridge Galleries (summer 2003).

Walden has now written a book which uses his travels that summer to occasion reflection on the historical and philosophical aspects of resettlement, and on the potential of still photography in dealing with the loss these physical remnants represent.  Entitled Places Lost: In Search of Newfoundland's Resettled Communities, the book includes duotone reproductions of 40 of the Unsettled images, along with many vintage images of the communities in their heyday.
