One of Courtenay's best book, this epic is an absolute page turner. Be sure to get the sequel Tandia and read them together - fantastic.

This is the first of Courtenay's books that I read and I must say that it remains my favorite one. It is probably because it is the first one and I was unfamiliar with his writing style, because all of his books are simply amazing. Bryce Courtenay manages to develop his main characters in such depth that later you feel as attached to them as you would to a best friend or a close relative. If you haven't read this book I recommend it from the bottom of my heart and don't worry it is followed by Tandia (also awesome), so the story doesn't end. If you haven't read any of his books, trust me you won't be sorry.

I read this book a couple of years ago when I was reading through the Chapters Top 100. I absolutely loved it. This book shows that racism is more than just a black and white issue and has a wonderful touch of spirituality. It is an amazing first novel. I loaned it to someone and they never returned it and because I spoke so highly of it to other people, I purchased another one to re-read it again and to share with other book lovers.
