Prey

by Michael Crichton

November 25, 2002 | Hardcover

In the Nevada desert, an experiment has gone horribly wrong. A cloud of nanoparticles--micro-robots--has escaped from the laboratory. This cloud is self-sustaining and self-reproducing. It is intelligent and learns from experience. For all practical purposes, it is alive.

It has been programmed as a predator. It is evolving swiftly, becoming more deadly with each passing hour.

Every attempt to destroy it has failed.

And we are the prey.

As fresh as today''s headlines, Michael Crichton''s most compelling novel yet tells the story of a mechanical plague and the desperate efforts of a handful of scientists to stop it. Drawing on up-to-the-minute scientific fact, "Prey" takes us into the emerging realms of nanotechnology and artificial distributed intelligence--in a story of breathtaking suspense. "Prey" is a novel you can''t put down.

Because time is running out.

    Requires Speedy Eyes....!!!

This book inrtigued me from the beginning, having an interest in science, technology, computers and of course nano-technology it was sure to be something I enjoyed to read. I found this novel quite creepy, it literally made my skin crawl and made me think about how this could really happen in our lifetime. Not to mention this novel is so fast paced my eyes couldn't move fast enough accross the page to find out what was going to happen next.

Scientists are plunging further and further into microtechonolgy/biology, stem cell research and this book is probably not far from the truth. Michael Crichton wrote this in such a way one finds it hard to actually put the book down, I couldn't. I read it cover to cover in a short period of time and babbled on about this book at the dinner table. Of course this came highly recommended from my dad too, who after reading this decided to go against buying a certain mattress. I personally identified with the main character of the story, having been laid off from a career position before and being a single parent in the past it is no easy task. So dealing with the everyday domestic occurances along with an absent spouse and even stranger interactions with old collegues leads down a winding trail to where he discovers humans are the hunted.... the prey of a very advanced and hungry predator.... made by man.

Prey is one of Michel Chrichton`s best books, and it will catch

anyone`s attention from the very begining. When Jack Forman, a stay at

home dad, is starting get things staight in the house, weird things start to

happen to his family. Amanda, his baby, out of nowhere started to turn

purple everywhere and was examined by three of the best scientists/docter

in the city. It always takes a left when you think it takes a right. There is so

much suspense and so many different personalties. This is one of the best

    book anyone will read.

Jack is a "did the right thing and got fired" tech fellow, who specializes in writing code that mimics natural biological behaviour. His wife is working with a company doing something with nanotech. Things start to go wrong, and what escapes is nano-sized, pred/prey programmed, and self-replicating. Each chapter ends with slowly rising tension that I'm used to Crichton providing.

If I have any qualms, it's with the not-always explained abilities of the escaped nanotech, and a somewhat obvious "this is what I think is inevitable, so smarten up, humanity!" overtone that Crichten might have toned down just a little.

I normally really like Crichton's books, but this one just didn't pull me in at all. I can read A Case of Need over and over, this one I've stopped half way through and I feel no great need to continue...
