From the Jacket

This book has been consistently praised for its style and its vision of the world. It explores the prehistory of the globe, but can also be read as a psychological quest, for the journey itself is as important as arrival or discovery. A classic nineteenth-century French literature, the novel''s distinctive combination of realism and Romanticism has marked figure as diverse as Sorter and Turner, Mark Twain and Cowan Doyle.

About the Author

Jules Verne, one of the most influential writers of modern times, was born on February 8, 1828 in Nantes, France. He wrote for the theater and worked briefly as a stockbroker. Verne is considered by many to be the father of science fiction. His most popular novels include Journey to the Center of the Earth, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, and Around the World in Eighty Days. These and others have been made into movies and TV mini-series. Twenty Thousand Leagues is even the basis of a popular ride at the Disney theme parks. In 1892, he was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in France. He died on March 24, 1905 in Amiens, France.

From Our Editors

Professor Otto Lidenbrock has a very important scientific theory to prove: that the core of the Earth is not, in fact, molten lava, but a mysterious and magical place! Based on a series of mysterious events, including deciphering a cryptic message written on a scarp of parchment by an ancient alchemist, the Professor, his nephew Axel, his pretty young ward and the mountain guide Hans begin the quest of a lifetime. A classic adventure novel that both children and adults enjoy for its sheer inventiveness and yet moments of intense realism, Journey to the Centre of the Earth makes a wonderfully fitting accompaniment to Jules Verne's other epic, Around the World in Eighty Days.
