Purple Cow: Transform Your Business By Being Remarkable

Purple Cow: Transform Your Business By Being Remarkable

by Seth Godin

Gildan Audio | September 27, 2011 | Audio Book (CD)

In 2002, Seth Godin asked a simple question that turned the business world upside down: What do Starbucks and JetBlue and Apple and Dutch Boy and Hard Candy have that other companies don''t? How did they confound critics and achieve spectacular growth, leaving behind formerly tried-and-true brands?

Godin showed that the traditional Ps that marketers had used for decades to get their products noticed-pricing, promotion, publicity, packaging, etc.-weren''t working anymore. Marketers were ignoring the most important P of all: the Purple Cow.

Cows, after you''ve seen one or two or ten, are boring. A Purple Cow, though . . . now that would be something. Godin defines a Purple Cow as anything phenomenal, counterintuitive, exciting . . . remarkable. Every day, consumers ignore a lot of brown cows, but you can bet they won''t ignore a Purple Cow.

You can''t paint your product or service purple after the fact. You have to be inherently purple or no one will talk about you. Godin urges you to emulate companies that are consistently remarkable in everything they do, which drives explosive word of mouth.

Purple Cow launched a movement to create products and services that are worth marketing in the first place. Now this expanded edition includes dozens of new examples from readers who''ve taken the message to heart.

This book is an easy read, with little chapters, which lets you "chew on" what he has said. It is a great modivational tool for those interested in truly standing above the rest. It's full of real-world examples and anecdotes that can be used for business or personal modivation.

Seth Godin uses lots of examples and case studies to show you many creative ways to market your business. You can't afford to be boring and make your business look similar to your competition, be different, be unique.

A small book but packed with lots of great ideas to make customers think your business is special. One of his best books.

This book is probably best for someone who really does not know anything about marketing, and even that is probably stretching it a bit. For what you get, this book is way overpriced.

In a nutshell, you are to 'stand out' with your marketing efforts, like the proverbial Purple Cow in the title standing out in a herd of Guernseys. Really? I thought the point of advertising was to blend in with your competition's efforts. I really don't understand what point Godin is trying to get across --- why in the world would any marketer want their ad to stand out vis-a-vis the competition?

For a better read, try High Intensity Marketing or some of Philip Kotler's.
