Raising Your Spirited Child Rev Ed: A Guide for Parents Whose Child Is More Intense, Sensitive, Perceptive, Persistent, and Energetic

by Mary S Kurcinka

HARPERCOLLINS PUBLISHERS | November 16, 2006 | Trade Paperback

Newly revised, featuring the most up-to-date research, effective strategies, and real-life stories

The spirited childâ€"often called "difficult" or "strong-willed"â€"possesses traits we value in adults yet find challenging in children. Research shows that spirited kids are wired to be "more"â€"by temperament, they are more intense, sensitive, perceptive, persistent, and uncomfortable with change than the average child. In this revised edition of the award-winning classic, voted one of the top twenty books for parents, Kurcinka provides vivid examples and a refreshingly positive viewpoint. Raising Your Spirited Child will help you:

  • understand your child'sâ€"and your ownâ€"temperamental traits
  • discover the power of positiveâ€"rather than negativeâ€"labels
  • cope with the tantrums and power struggles when they do occur
  • plan for success with a simple four-step program
  • develop strategies for handling mealtimes, sibling rivalry, bedtimes, holidays, and school, among other situations

I like the book but the eBook has a problem. It skips back to the same page no matter how far along I read, so I have to flip through it one page at a time to get back to my spot. Very irritating. Get the hard copy and enjoy making your own notes in the margins! The book itself is good for any parent with young children.

I have 2 intensely spirited children in a very remote area. After reading a variety of different parenting books to try to save my sanity without breaking my children's spirits, since that is who they are after all, I stumbled onto this one and promptly bought a copy. It has excellent practical advice - a person might not want to follow it by the letter - but it has definitely saved both myself and my children's sanity.

This book gives a very different point of view to understanding some of the driving reasons that our kids do what they do. I didn't agree with everything that I read but I DID find a wealth of great tips and helpful insight that I will definitely recommend this books to my friends! Very much worth the read.
