Random Passage

by Bernice Morgan

Breakwater Books Ltd. | May 1, 1992 | Trade Paperback

Forced to flee England, the Andrews family books passage to a fresh start in a distant country, only to discover a barren, inhospitable land at the end of their crossing. To seventeen-year-old Lavinia, uprooted from everything familiar, it seems a fate worse than the one they left behind. Driven by loneliness she begins a journal. Random Passage satisfies the craving for those details that headstones and history books can never give: the real story of our Newfoundland ancestors, of how time and chance brought them to the forbidding shores of a new found land. It is a saga of families and of individuals; of acquisitive Mary Bundle; of charming Ned Andrews, whose thievery has turned his family into exiles; of mad Ida; of Thomas Hutchings, who might be an aristocrat, a holy man, or a murderer; and of Lavinia - who wrote down the truth and lies about them all. Random Passage has been adapted into a CBC miniseries and is now a national bestseller.

Beautifully written novel about life in early Newfoundland. The characters are completely brought to life so that you agonize with them and share in their heartbreaks and triumphs. You feel a part of the community and don't want to leave it when it ends - so continue on the Waiting For Time which adds to this wonderful narrative. Brilliant!

This is the best book I have ever read! I watched the mini-series on CBC first and have just finished the book. I was reading for 2 days straight! I just could not get enough!! This book made me feel like I was right back at home and I can hardly believe how some people endured these hardships. I think Canadians could learn a lot about Newfoundlanders if they read this book! I'm now halfway through the sequel.

    Outport Living

Random Passage's description of outport living brought to life the way my ancestors must have lived. My family tree research has been mostly numbers and dates, but this book opened my eyes on the endurance and courage the new settlers must have had. My ancestors were from Fogo Island, which even got a mention in the book! If you loved this one, try Kit's Law by Donna Morrissey. Its setting is more recent, but it's equally good reading. Three nights of staying up till 3 am was definitely worth it!

I bought the book when I was in Newfoundland and couldn't put it down. It is an amazing work of art and everyone should read this because it is a little taste of Newfoundland.

Couldn't put this one down. Truly enjoyable. I found myself getting involved in their lives and hard ships, wondering what was going to take place next. The story made me feel for the struggle that they all had to endure in the earily years. It's a story about the struggle and hardships in a New Found Land before the time of confederation.

Bernice Morgan literally transports us to an isolated Nfld outport in the early 1800's. The effort required to simply survive in an Nfld outport of that era is vividly brought to life as we become embroiled in the lives of the Vincents and Andrews. An excellent story and one of the best books to come out of Nfld in a long time - far better than a number of other popular Nfld based novels that have emerged over the past couple years.
I've aleady ordered the sequel, "Waiting For Time" and hope it's half as good as Random Passage.

Possibly the best work of fiction to come out of Contemporary Newfoundland, and one of Canada's finest novels. I was entranced by its characters, setting and scope. Far better than "The Shipping News" or "Away". Should be on anyone's list of must-reads.

a marvellous read for anyone but especially Canadians! It kept my attention and swept me into the maritimes for a long time. So few good books about the history of eastern Canada that I was thrilled to have had the opportunity to have heard about it!
