It is not an easy read, there are many references to theologians, philosophers and academics that I think the average Canadian does not know. Although it is not a long book, 200 odd pages, his style of writing could be more concise and the frequent metaphors/similies get a bit tiring, as does his often almost cruel comments about Hitchens/Darkins which sort of brings the debate to the school-yard bully level. Nonetheless, I find that Eagleton presents a lot of good information that makes the reader really question the rational that atheist use to argue against God. Eagleton has made me aware of how ignorant I was about theology and made me aware that is a very different way to look at the God debate, theology and of course, human nature, that is nonetheless reasonable and intelligent. Anybody who has read Hitchen, Dawkins, or Harris should read this book to get a balanced view of the debate. It is hard to read, yes, but I intend to re-read it more carefully in the short future.
