Rebar

by Audrey Alsterberg

Big Ideas Publishing | November 1, 2001 | Trade Paperback

The Rebar Modern Food Cookbook offers something for everyone - strict vegans, vegetarians (full and part-time) and anyone looking for delicious ideas with a fresh and funky twist. Rebar, the building material, gives support and strength to structures, just as tasty, nutritious food provides valuable support for the body and mind.

This book is meant to be used and enjoyed with recipes ranging from salads, pastas, entrées, great brunch ideas, soups, sandwiches, side dishes and sweets to fresh juices. Each page offers handy tips, menu ideas, seasonal substitutions and suggestions for transforming dishes into low-fat or vegan alternatives. Fuel your body and soul with a Botanical Burger with Lime-Tarragon Mayonnaise. Start the day right with the famous Huevos Rancheros and finish with rich Vegan Fudge Brownies.

Restaurant anecdotes and photographs capture the lively spirit of Rebar and its people. Since 1989, Rebar Modern Food has been Victoria's favourite restaurant and fresh juice bar featuring fresh, healthy and predominantly vegetarian fare. The upbeat atomsphere and vibrant food has led critics to describe Rebar as "inventive", "hip " and "visionary." In this book, owner Audrey Alsterberg and chef Wanda Urbanowicz share their favourite restaurant recipes.

    BEST COOKBOOK EVER!!!

I discovered this book in 2008 and it has become a member of the family :) The recipes are creative and the combinations of tastes are delicious. I am from a polish/ukranian background and there are several recipes here that are classic polish dishes (borscht, pierogies) but with a unique twist to them which has been great. The vegan alternatives are also fantastic and great for entertaining.

One thing about these recipes is that they are defintely for cooks who like to COOK!! It is entirely possible to wake up in the morning and spend the entire day making dinner.... I welcome this, but not all cooks do :)

We LOVE this cookbook. Everything, absolutely everything we've made from this cookbook has been phenomenal. Yes, there are tons of ingredients to assemble, BUT the end results are amazing. This cookbook got my 13 year old son turned on to cooking, and getting a 13-year-old who is addicted to video games interested is something that isn't electronic is no mean feat. (Now, instead of games he's asking for Wusthoff knives for his birthday!) You will not be disappointed! Our favorite recipes include Pasta Alla Arrabiata Sauce; Black Bean Soup; African Yam and Peanut Soup; Linguine with Sundried Tomatoes and Artichokes, Latkes with Poached Eggs, Thai Dragon Bowl, and, OMG!, the best BBQ sauce you've ever tasted! You will love it. It For those who love to cook and those who love to eat... Rebar will become your staple cookbook.

    Fabulous!

For those of you out there thinking, "I couldn't possibly need yet ANOTHER cookbook," think again!! Although, this IS a vegetarian cookbook, the recipes are so amazing, you won't even realize that there's something missing (meat!). I would highly recommend this book, especially for the more health-conscience person, since a lot of the recipes contain healthier ingredients. Before you think that you'll be feasting on birdseed, I just made the REBAR chocolate cake last night for my Dad's birthday. It's a 3-layer chocolate cake, with chocolate cream cheese filling and a chocolate ganache!! So there are still decadent, REAL WORLD foods. This book also makes a terrific gift for friends and family in your life who love to cook. Everyone I've come across who flips through it, just LOVES it! You will too!!

Great receipes from a great restaurant. I have used this book for the last year, mostly for weekend dinners with family and friends. The food is interesting even for non-vegetarians. Some of the ingredients I find hard to get tho.

We made the wild rice/smoked salmon cakes with the recommended salsa and also the baked yams with lime and honey, Excellent. The drink recipes look fabulous and I enjoy reading the health benefits of each concoction. I do find that quite a few recipes need special ingredients that I do not have regularly in my cupboards. Rebar is my favorite restaurant in Victoria and it is nice to bring a little bit of it home. Diana Madsen

I lived in Victoria for 7 years and Rebar was by far my favourite restaurant. I was feeling homesick this past weekend and made the Sweet and Spicy Black Bean Soup…oh wow…my new favourite soup! There's not a recipe in this book that I've tried that I haven't loved.
