Rebel Angels

by Libba Bray

Random House Children's Books | December 26, 2006 | Trade Paperback

Gemma Doyle is looking forward to a holiday from Spence Academy-spending time with her friends in the city, attending balls in fancy gowns with plunging necklines, and dallying with the handsome Lord Denby. Yet amid these distractions, her visions intensify-visions of three girls dressed in white, to whom something horrific has happened that only the realms can explain.

The lure is strong, and soon Gemma, Felicity, and Ann are turning flowers into butterflies in the enchanted world that Gemma takes them to. To the girls'' great joy, their beloved Pippa is there as well, eager to complete their circle of friendship.

But all is not well in the realms-or out. Kartik is back, desperately insisting to Gemma that she must bind the magic, lest colossal disaster befall her. Gemma is willing to comply, for this would bring her face-to-face with her late mother''s greatest friend, now Gemma''s foe-Circe. Until Circe is destroyed, Gemma cannot live out her destiny. But finding Circe proves a most perilous task. . . .

This sumptuous companion to A Great and Terrible Beauty teems with Victorian thrills and chills that play out against the rich backdrop of 1895 London, a place of shadows and light . . . where inside great beauty can lie a rebel angel.

I don't much care for how the author writes her characters or her 'imaginary' place. It seems so minute and innefective as a grand mystical place. That the friends could go on quests and journey's only occassionaly, and still have time to make it back for supper in the same day... Just takes some of the magic out of the story for me.

The characters, even the best friends, don't seem to like eachother, which makes their 'warm' moments bothersome. And their wining tiresome. Nothing really happens to them that isn't solved within a chapter or two. Removing any sort of story developing tension!

The story was cute enough. It's a fairly light, and quick read. I haven't read the first volume, so I don't know how it compares or adds on to the initial story -- but for my part, I would recommend reading something else...

I just got so tired of these girls gossiping and being mean to those who are supposed to be their friends. I thought they were disgusting role models for young girls. The fantasy part of it was okay, I thought. It was just the personalities she wrote that I thought sucked.

"Rebel Angels", the sequel to "A Great and Terrible Beauty", is a literary masterpiece. It is a curl-up-under-your-covers type of book that glues itself to your hands and simply will not become unstuck. Set in the late 19th century, it is the story of Gemma, a vivacious young girl who discovers her hidden magical powers, as well as the responsibilities that accompany them. It is a thickly and intricately woven web of danger, romance, suspense, mystery, magic, and intrigue, where nothing is as it seems, and no one can be trusted. It is extremely well written, with prose as smooth as silk, and characters that jump out of the book and become your friends (or your enemies). This incomparable and sumptuous tour de force tells an irresistible tale of rustling skirts, forbidden thoughts, whispered secrets, plunging necklines, and rebel angels.
