This is a retelling, of sorts, of the Biblical story of Hosea and
Gomer. In the book, a man, Michael Hosea, who lives in the time of
the California gold rush, falls in love with a prostitute, named
Angel.
She had been sold into prostitution as a child. He redeems her,
marries her, and begins to show her sacrificial love. She has been
used her whole life and takes a long time to learn to trust him and
see that he is different from other men. He is an exceptional man.
Over time, she begins to fall in love with him, but doesn't feel
worthy of his love. She runs away several times, sometimes back to
the brothel.
It's a beautiful, tender love story. Even the descriptions of the
seedy side of the story are not graphic or crude, but you still see
the reality of what she endured.
