Redeeming Love

by Francine Rivers

The Doubleday Religious Publishing Group | May 9, 2005 | Trade Paperback

A Story of Love That Won''t Let Go - No Matter What!

California's gold country, 1850. A time when men sold their souls for a bag of gold and women sold their bodies for a place to sleep.

Angel expects nothing from men but betrayal. Sold into prostitution as a child, she survives by keeping her hatred alive. And what she hates most are the men who use her, leaving her empty and dead inside.

Then she meets Michael Hosea, a man who seeks his Father's heart in everything. Michael obeys God's call to marry Angel and to love her unconditionally. Slowly, day by day, he defies Angel's every bitter expectation, until despite her resistance, her frozen heart begins to thaw.

But with her unexpected softening comes overwhelming feelings of unworthiness and fear. And so Angel runs. Back to the darkness, away from her husband's pursuing love, terrified of the truth she no longer can deny: Her final healing must come from the One who loves her even more than Michael does…the One who will never let her go.

A powerful retelling of the story of Gomer and Hosea, Redeeming Love is a life-changing story of God's unconditional, redemptive, all-consuming love.

    Redeeming Love!

    Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers

Having given my life to Christ in my teenage years I have vowed not to read circular books in terms of books that will not enhance my life as a believer. So I began to search for interesting writers that would keep me glued as well as teach me what I needed to enhance my growth as a young Christian.

I have read so many books but none can be compared to the "Redeeming Love" written by Francine Rivers, I ran into an old friend who was clutching on to the book, I got curious and wanted to know what type of book she was reading, she said it's a must read!. Long story short, I borrowed the book from her and it changed my philosophy about forgiveness and the greatest love a human can give to another human. Redeeming love is the kind of love story that will keep you turning page after page, as I read it, the love of God began to run through my mind, I began to see how I would backslide from my faith and His unconditional love will bring me back to Him.

The love Michael had for Angel is clearly compared to the kind of love God has for us, God was able to let Jesus die for our sins because of the love He has for us, despite all what Angel did in the story, Michael still took her back (I found that annoying but then I thought about how God must feel whenever I go back to my sins). Francine portrayed what real married love should look like and the contrasts between happiness and sadness, truth and lies, it's a must read for everyone especially people who are planning on getting married.

This is one of my all time favorites, no matter how many times I read the book I'll find new aspects to the love between God and Man and Husband and Wife. Francine Rivers knows how to capture your attention and make you a part of the story. Careful this read will make you laugh and require tissues!

Mostly I read mystery but someone gave me this to read and I fell in love with this book. I thought I wouldn't enjoy the book because it had a religious plot, but I was pleasently surprised! In all the years I have been reading, this is my favorite book. My husband came home to find me sobbing over this book. I don't think I talked to anyone for three days until I finished the book. You will not be disappointed. Whether you go to church or not...you will love this book. :)

This is a retelling, of sorts, of the Biblical story of Hosea and Gomer. In the book, a man, Michael Hosea, who lives in the time of the California gold rush, falls in love with a prostitute, named Angel.
She had been sold into prostitution as a child. He redeems her, marries her, and begins to show her sacrificial love. She has been used her whole life and takes a long time to learn to trust him and see that he is different from other men. He is an exceptional man. Over time, she begins to fall in love with him, but doesn't feel worthy of his love. She runs away several times, sometimes back to the brothel.
It's a beautiful, tender love story. Even the descriptions of the seedy side of the story are not graphic or crude, but you still see the reality of what she endured.

    Completely Amazing!

I read this book for the first time when I was in grade nine, over eight years ago. Since then, I have read hundreds of books by top authors and recommended by top critics, but I always come back to Redeeming Love. In the past seven years I have read this at least half a dozen times each year and I still cannot put it down. This book has become apart of me. Francine makes me cry and weep, and then I turn the page and smile through my tears and laugh through my sobs. Francine has inspired me to shed my judgments, my pride, my envy, and my hatred in search of understanding and forgiveness for all. This book has not just inspired my faith but has brought me closer to God, and each time I read it, I feel cleansed. I feel renewed. I recommend this book to everyone, whether you have faith or not. Francine Rivers is a timeless author who's work in Christian writing will never be matched.

    Amazing Book

Francine Rivers is a talented writer and has a way with words. In this day in age where most books have to really cultivate readers in order to sell, she does a very good job of keeping her readers inspired. Every chapter is filled with so much emotion, and one cannot help but wonder if such characters are alive today.
Francine Rivers keeps you entertained from the beginning to the end of her book and her characters have specific roles that keep building from one chapter to the next. In the book Redeeming Love, she helps the reader understand partly what she believes in through her writing style and her writing techniques are hard to challenge since her books are very interesting to read. She gives her audience hope and she relates to romance as seen in the past and also relates to romance in the present through the eyes of a Christian and I find that very beautiful in the sense that her characters are the complete opposite of the Christian values as we know them in this day in age.
It is amazing to think that this writer has captured a romantic genre and has kept the Christian values intact. She leaves her readers wanting for more and I cannot wait to read another one of her books.
All through out her book, as a reader, I get the feeling that she gives hope to the reader on how love should be today. This book is set up in the early nineteenth century but the ideas of love are still the same. Her book gives you a sense of how far we have stepped out of true love and marriage.

    The Best of the Best!

I usually stick to my beloved Karen Kingsbury books, but my friend had recommended The Atonement Child which I absolutely loved! After reading one of Francine Rivers' books, I decided to try another, so I ordered Redeeming Love. This is by far, the BEST book in history. It is a story of love, between a couple, between friends, and from God. It is a beautiful story, one I will always remember and will probably read again and again. Don't be scared by how long the book is, once you start reading it, you'll want it to go on forever. The story has it's hard parts, ones that will make you cry, but also parts that will make you laugh and parts that you will feel like you're feeling exactly what Angel/Sarah is feeling. I would reccommend this book to ANYONE. I promise you will love it.

although one or two parts are very hard to read about, overall this book is amazing. The parable to the bible's book of Hosea was very amazing, and so close to what the bible says too. I loved the characters and the love that they share in the end.

Could not put this down...read it in three days!!

This book was recommended to me by a close friend who knew that I wasn't the most avid of readers! I took a look at the size of the book (400+ pages) and thought my friend must be crazy. I did decide to sit down and read it, and soon after discovered that I couldn't put it down. I have been a Christian for a long time and have never really understood the book of Hosea until reading about the Love and passion of our saviour though this book.

The Best Book I have ever read

I am a 20 year old University student. My aunt sent me this book. At first I thought that it was going to be very preachy and boring. But I was wrong. In my 20 years of life I have read thousands of books and this was the best. I was stressed out after a hard semester at school and I wanted to feel touched by something. It was the first book that I ever cried while reading. It is definitly a book that everyone should read. It is not just for the faithfull but for the faithless. You may not beleive in god but after reading this book you will belive in yourself. I promise.

I originally started this book three years ago. The forward was so hard for me to read because of the harshness shown to the child that I had to put it down. My friends told me time and again that I had to get past that to the heart of the book becasue it would be life changing. It took me almoost two years to pick it up again. I started where I had left off and did not put it down until I finished. I looked forward each day to reading about the character's lives. I felt a true connection with the characters and learned more about myself with each passing chapter. By the time I got to the end of the book I would sum the experience up as LIFE CHANGING. Thank you Francine for the experience!
