Repairing Rainbows: A True Story of Family, Tragedy and Choices

by Lynda Fishman

Lynda Fishman | June 15, 2010 | Trade Paperback

At  thirteen years old Lynda’s life comes to a disastrous halt when her mother and two younger sisters are killed in a plane crash. Her father, overcome by despair, simply continues to exist, in a state devoid of hope. After burying a wife and two young children at the age of 44, the overwhelming responsibility of raising a daughter alone completely immobilizes him. Teetering on that tender brink between childhood and adolescence, Lynda faces the responsibility of a father in a complete state of shock, a house to take care of and hundreds of decisions about how to proceed with their shattered lives. In Repairing Rainbows she candidly describes the agonizing memories, deafening silence and endless hardships that are the fallout of incredible loss. As we follow her through marriage, motherhood and her own spiritual journey, Lynda reveals her complex feelings of hope, anger, pity and determination. Most importantly, she learns the crucial difference between “truly living” and the existence that is so often mistaken for being alive. A true story, written by a woman whose normal and abundant life hides a terrible past, Repairing Rainbows is loaded with lessons that will undoubtedly touch the hearts of its readers.

    A Powerful Non-Stop Read
This book pulled me in and kept my interest until I read the last page. Even though I read the book weeks ago, I still think about it, and I am sure it will stay with me for quite a while. In fact, Repairing Rainbows has had such an impact on my life that I keep it at my bedside.
Lynda was 13 years old when her mother and two sisters were killed in an Air Canada plane crash. Her father seemed to have been frozen in a state of shock having lost half of his family and then having the sole responsibility of raising his surviving daughter. It is almost impossible to understand what Lynda and her father were going through, but Lynda does a beautiful job of telling her story. The first part is hard to read without a box of tissue readily available, but it is worth every tear. It is a raw but powerful story about how a young teen was able to rebuild her life after a horrific tragedy. The story is heartbreaking, while at the same time very inspiring. This is a story full of important messages about survival, strength, courage, love and life.
For me, the most meaningful lesson is that we always have choices and we always make choices. I think about that all the time.
Repairing Rainbows is an unforgettable read. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

An incredible story by an incredible woman, so tragic, yet so inspirational. This is a story that has stayed with me. Lynda's writing style is so down to earth, and so honest. She allows you to experience every emotion of hers throughout her story.
If I could rate this book more than 5 stars, I would.
    It's just a MUST READ!

Repairing Rainbows: A True Story of Family, Tragedy and Choices is the heartbreaking (and heartwarming) true story of a young teenager, Lynda, suddenly faced with unthinkable tragedy: the loss of her mother and two younger sisters in a horrific plane crash. At a difficult time in any teen's life, she must find a way to deal with her intense anguish and despair, as well as take care of her heartbroken and devastated father who seems to have lost his very reason for existing. But despite all of her sadness, pain, anger, fear, terrifying nightmares about the crash and intense longing for her mother and sisters, she manages to find solace in her daydreams about happier times which help her to move forward. She is convinced that there is a reason that she wasn't on that plane and perseveres with her ultimate goal of having a full, happy and meaningful life. Forty years later, Lynda is finally able to tell her story, one which is incredibly inspirational, painfully honest, full of raw emotion, guaranteed to make you cry and eventually cheer as happiness finally triumphs over unbelievable tragedy, thanks to her courage, unwavering strength of character, and the constant support of a wonderful extended family. Anyone who has ever lost a loved one and struggled to overcome the grief and inevitable loneliness should definitely read this powerful personal account...

This autobiography, and memoir, reads like a conversation.
Lynda writes as though she was sitting across the table from you, a friend, and telling you about her life. No words can really explain the feelings and thoughts that arise when reading this book. I was so drawn into the story that I could not put the book down.

This story is one that needs to be told and shared, not only for the historical aspects, but also for the inspirational. Here is a girl who wisely decided that in spite of a traumatic loss of her dear sisters and mother, that she would draw close to her love, positivity, and good fortune. She shares such insight into her relationships and experiences, yet strove to move past them and not let them shape who she wanted to be. Now a successful woman, she is a testament to that vow and that journey - with a kind and generous heart, rich family life, and successful business, she is a real inspiration to everyone.

Lynda, thank you for opening your heart and sharing this story.
