To five-year-old Jack, Room is the entire world. It's where he was born and where he and his Ma eat and play and learn. At night, Ma puts him safely to sleep in the wardrobe, in caseOld Nick comes.

Room is home to Jack, but to Ma, it's the prison where Old Nick has kept her for seven years, since she was nineteen. Through ingenuity and determination, Ma has created a life for herself and her son, but she knows it's not enough for either ofthem. Jack's curiosity is building alongside Ma's desperation -- and Room can't contain either of them for much longer...

Told entirely in the inventive, often funny voice of Jack, Room is a celebration of the resilient bond between parent and child, and a brilliantly executed novel about a journey from one world to another.

    An Important Topic

I really loved the plot of the book. It's about a 19 year old girl who was kidnapped, and had spent seven years of her life in an 11 by 11 foot space. She has a stillbirth, and later on a baby. Obviously she's been trying to escape for years, but the baby reinforced her hope of getting the hell out of there. She just knew that her child couldn't spend the rest of his days in there. However, this book is told from a 5 year old's perspective, Jack. He obviously doesn't talk or think like adults, so his sentences can be really confusing at times. When he was talking about breastfeeding, he would always just say "have some", so for the first quarter of the book, I was just completely confused.. have WHAT ? I felt really bad for Jack because he had spent his first five years imprisoned in this room, but he thought of it as a home. He had no idea that there was a whole world outside of that room, he didn't know that some of the things on TV were actually real. Until Ma told him, and even when she did, he struggled so hard with the idea that Room wasn't the world. Overall, I loved this book a lot and recommend it to others who enjoy fiction. It shows the strong relationship that Jack and Ma had developed in those five years, and their strong love that refuses to let them be separated. Room was suspenseful and thrilling, making up for a really great read. Things like this really do happen in the real world, but I imagine some are even worse.

"Today I am five. I was four last night going to sleep in Wardrobe, but when I woke up in Bed in the dark I am changed to five abracadabra. Before that I was three, then two, then one, then zero. “Was I minus numbers?”" Jack is the narrator of Emma Donoghue’s stunning novel, Room. (Yes, I am late to the bandwagon; everyone and their dog was talking about this book when it first came out. But you all know I buy more books than it will ever be possible for me to read, right?) From the book’s opening scene until I closed the novel a few hours later I was totally mesmerized by Jack and his Ma and the eleven by eleven world they lived in, their ‘Room.’ Jack and Ma live in this Room because of Old Nick, a predator who kidnapped Ma when she was 19 and has held her captive for seven years. Room is a prison, but it’s also the only home Jack has ever known. He doesn’t understand Outside, but he’s curious and Ma knows that time is running out. They must find a way to escape. Jack is a mesmerizing character and although it was risky to allow the story be told entirely through him, it’s a risk that pays off. His worldview is so naive. He has no real concept of time (his sixth birthday will happen next week, his birthday cake takes hours and hours to make) and he believes that the people in TV “are made just of colors.” His world is structured: sleep, eat, exercise, watch TV, read. His only playmate is his mother, but even through his innocent eyes he can see that Ma is struggling. Sometimes she spends entire days “Gone.” Sometimes she displays emotions Jack is unable to understand. "What wakes me up is a noise over and over. Ma’s not in bed. There’s a bit of light, the air’s still icy. I look over the edge, she’s in the middle of Floor going thump thump thump with her hand. “What did Floor do?” Ma stops, she puffs out a long breath. “I need to hit something,” she says, but I don’t want to break anything.” “Why not?” “Actually, I’d love to break something. I’d love to break everything.” “I don’t like her like this. “What’s for breakfast?”" Room is a remarkable achievement. It reads like a thriller; I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. But it is also a beautiful testament to the power of love. What wouldn’t Ma do for Jack? Even more amazing, is what Jack is willing and able to do for Ma. I’ll be thinking about this book for a long time. Highly recommended.

    Hard Read

This is a good book, but I found it hard to keep myself interested in the book. I found it sometimes very repetitive and boring. Wish it had been written a bit better and not based totally on a 5 year olds aspect of his world. I would like to have had his mother's take on the situation how she coped for seven years of being held captive and what she did to keep her spriits up during that time..

    Really Enjoyed!

I really enjoyed this book! Though the premise is slightly disturbing, what got me was the great writing. The author really captured the view/voice of a child and a hope in the mother. It was a great read and I recommend it to all my friends.

I enjoyed this book but only to a certain extent. It was a bit hard to read at first because it is written from the perspective of a 5 year old boy who has never really learned how to speak properly. However, the plot was really great at the beginning and it kept me hooked. As the book went on, it just seemed to drag a bit and sometimes the boy made me really annoyed... Overall, I would say it is definitely an original book because I have never come across anything like this before.

    Almost a perfect book.....

The Room was a book that, at first, I became instantly addicted to. I simply could not put the book down as I was amazed with the story of a kidnapped victim, living in a small room and raising a small child, who was an unfortunate product of the kidnapping and subsequent rapes. After two-thirds of the book (I don’t want to give away how the story unfolds), it still remained interesting, but not as engrossing. The story is written from the perspective of the 5 year old, is interesting but gets a bit old and annoying near the end. The book overall is entertaining and very intriguing at times. Other than the final third of the book, a well crafted novel.

Could not put this book down. Read it in a matter of hours, it was emotional but at the same time your feelings are confused. I love how this story was told through the eyes of a little boy, it makes the book more compelling. All I can say is that I loved this book and cannot wait to read another book by this author.

    Really well written and absorbing
    by Amanda Sealey

The subject matter was iffy for me and I hesitated to start reading it. But I found it really absorbing - it wasn't too hard to read, the writer didn't dwell on the difficult part of the story more than necessary and it was really interested reading it from the boy's point of view. Sad, at times, but worth it in the end. Very original.

    Setting Free and Letting Go

Jack is a 5 years old boy who lives in a special world. A world made up by his mother, a 12 foot square world all controlled by his mother's aggressor who keeps them in captivity, who has stolen irrevocably a part of their youth. Jack lives an existence full of rules and limits where every day repeats itself. When his beloved mother decides it's time for him to learn the truth, Jack realizes how everything is different and how "outside" is big, a whole new world without boundaries. His escape will provoke a sequence of events that will definitely change his world view. According to me, his adaptation to reality is the center of the novel. This novel is inspired by a real life experience. I recommend it to everyone who has interests in psychological functioning and in children's development.

For Those Who Forgot About Love
    by chiakoun yapi

Room is a great novel. It's the story of a young woman that was kidnapped when she was nineteen and taken into a room where almost every day she is raped by by the same man, father of her child Jack. It's very interesting to read the book because their story is told by Jack, a five years old child. It's very touching to see all the innocence of childhood being broke all of a sudden when Jack realizes something is not right and there is actually an Outsidde world, a place where they belong. Room is a novel about the love between a mother and her son, the love that can save their life, the love that will go against everything that can stop their happiness. This is a novel I recommend to everyone.

I really liked the book because it`s original. The beginning of the book is quite boring because there isn`t a lot of action but the further you advance in the book, the more interesting it is. You really get to feel the connection between two amazing characters, Jack and Ma. I think Emma Donoghue did a great job with this book. She allowed the reader to get in touch easily with the characters. This novel is inspired by a true story and I would recommend this book to parents and to adults.

    Room
    by Darick Forgues

Room is a novel about love between a mother and her child. They are both held captive in Old Nick's house. This man kidnapped Ma when she was 19 years old. She lived in the room with her son, Jack, for 5 years. Jack dosen't have a real notion of the world because all he thinks that exist is in the room. He struggles to understand that what he sees on television is real. Finally, Ma and Jack manage a plan to room break and they make it to execution. Subsequently, they live with psychological problems. That bok is really good and you can find drama and a little bit of thriller. That why I recommend this novel to everyone older than 12 years old.

    Shoking and Touching
    by Justine Soubyran

By its title, the book gives no idea about the story, the summary neigther, but as we start reading it, it already seems to be an unusual story. In fact, it's all about the life of a five years old boy who never went outside of a little room where he lives with his mother. The reason why he doesn't get out is not clear at the beggining, but as we read, we learn that he was born in that room and that his ''father'' is in fact a man who kidnapped his mothsr many years before. The book will show the extraordinary story of this young boy, while he slowly learns about the thruth and tries to escape from his captivity with his mother. I will recommend this book to anyone who's looking for something new, shoking and touching.

I really enjoyed this book. It is the story of a mother that has been kidnapped when she was 19 and put in a small room. She had a baby while captivated that is named Jack.. Throughout all the book, the mother raises her son in the room, without going outside. From beginning to end, you are wondering what is going to happen and it creates a good suspense. I recommend this book to people who like good family union stories.

    Truly Revealing
    by Pamela Ostiguy

The beginning of the novel isn't really an interesting part of the story. It's mostly the presentation of the two main characters, which are Jack and his mom. It shows their daily routine in their room, and I must admit that it gets very repetitive. The best part of this novel begins when Jack's mother tells him her story about how she got kidnapped by Old Nick. She also explains to him that there's an outside world when you go out of the room. The issue is that Jack was born in this room and he doesn't understand how the outside world can exist. After their escape from this closed space, Jack will gradually learn about this whole new world around him. He gets confronted to the whole concept of socialization very quickly. This novel gives us a chance to go through this totally different point of view that people rarely experience. It is difficult to understand the world when you've never seen it, and this whole story explains this to us beautifully.

    The Innocence of a Child
    by Charles Adams

This slow pace story is about the inspiring essence of human survival. As Jack turns five, his mother (Ma), tries to explain life to the young man. The problem is that Ma was kidnaped when she was a teenager and has been abused by Old Nick, so she and her child are confined in only one room. Over the days, Ma tries to explain to Jack that life is not limited to those four walls and that what he sees on television is real, but that's its outside of the Room. One day, as Ma gets fed up, she plans an escape, that would work, with Jack playing the principal role. After the escape, the author makes an incredible job making us see our world; with the truth of a children's eyes. Even if there's not a lot of action, the whole psychological aspect is the interesting part about the novel, which I would definitly recomend that novel to adults who are tired of thrillers.

This book is about the relationship of a mother and her five years old son living alone in a room. They are under the influence of a men who kidnapped the mother when she was a teenager. It's interesting to know that this book is narrated by the little boy so we see everything trought the eyes of an innocent children. This is a strong strory of love between a mother and her son and how they manage to survive without their liberty. It's also a great story where hope is a main theme. Room is a very nice love story. Very touching and interesting. It's the story of a mother that lives in a small room with her little boy. They are stuck in it because the mama was captured when she was very young. So this book is all about how they are going to escape and the effort that this mom must do to be sure that her little boy is healthy and happy. We see the story trough the little boy eyes so it is captivating and cute at the same time. I would recommend this story to anyone who has a heart and want to be part of a incredible love story. You guys must remember that it is inspired of a true story ...it gives this book an uncomen sense. Enjoy

    Interesting
    by Julien Roy

At the beginning, this book seems very boring, but the more you progresss in the book, you get closer to the characters. Jack is lovely and Ma is very a deep character. You will learn to love her. After the first chapter, you will get very excited to read the novel. The end of the novel is something like you have never seen before. Emma Donoghue accomplish something very interesting by using Jack as the narrator. this bring something different to the other novel. This allows the reader to get in touch with the character very easily. On the downside, this book is very hard to read, especially if you have children.
