I read this one a few years ago and I just reread it because I remember thinking so highly of it. I never hear people dicuss this book very much which I think is a shame because it is very good.

We follow Rose Daniels, an abused wife who has stayed with her violent cop husband Norman for 14 years. One day something inside her clicks and she walks out of her house and gets on a bus to another town.

This book is good because we get to see both the point of view of Rose (one of King's more memorable female characters) and Norman, who is evil as they come and searching for his wife. We see Rose's independance and confidance grow, we see how evil Normal truly is and eventually the confrontation between man and wife again.

Really, really good. It also has a touch of fantasy and I am told that it has references to the Dark Tower series ( I have yet to read them so I don't know what the references are). I'd absolutely say this book should be on your to be read list.

    Good, but...

However, the end of the book (like most King books) was a bit of a let down. He had this great story that seemed powerful and real and scary and then... it turned weird and stupid. Like a Dean Koontz novel after the fifth page. He should have remained true to the book, and not taking it into the sci-fi realm, because it only hurts an otherwise great book.

    The Pattern of King

With an increasing number of books under his belt, King has amassed such a large audience of readers, that he is able to give his books a proper introduction and setup phase. Such is the case with Rose Madder. Although slow and frankly quite boring in the beginning, Rose Madder is one of those books that is well worth the fluff at the beginning. A gripping true to life story that in the end spirals off in so many directions that the reader is left dumbfounded at the brillaince of King's work. A truly wonderful piece of writing, definitely a keeper.
