SKYBREAKER

by Kenneth Oppel

HarperCollins Publishers Ltd | July 28, 2008 | Mass Market Paperbound

Pushed high into the sky by a storm over the Indian Ocean, the decrepit training ship Flotsam makes an astonishing discovery before being forced to descend. Adrift at 20,000 feet is a tattered, ice-crusted airship bearing the name Hyperion. Could it really be the legendary lost craft, now a vast treasure, a frozen mausoleum to a ghostly crew?
Matt Cruse is the only member of Flotsam’s oxygen-starved crew able to remember the ghost ship’s coordinates—and it seems as if everyone in the fabulous city of Paris wants them. Matt and Kate de Vries are challenged with another thrilling adventure, this time among the icy dangers and strange wonders of the upper atmosphere.
Hang on for the ride of your life as Kenneth Oppel, one of Canada’s greatest children’s authors, returns to a richly imagined world of airships and adventure!

The pacing, characterization and storyline in this series are all excellent and my son and I enjoy them immensely, but I am disappointed at the gratuitous glorification of drinking and smoking. The main characters drink regularly, even though Matt is underage. In one scene, Kate, who is clearly an inexperienced and unskilled pilot, drinks a glass of champagne at lunch and then flies, stating that she is 'very responsible' for limiting her intake to one glass. Real pilots have to wait 8 hours bottle to throttle.

In another scene, Matt and Kate give in to peer pressure and try smoking cigars, with Kate claiming she likes it, and another character is admired for her proficiency at smoking.

Neither scene is pivotal to the story, and their positive portrayal of these high-risk activities makes this book inappropriate for the target age group, which is a crying shame, because they are fabulous in every other way.

I first read this book a few years ago, reading it now I realize it is even better than I remembered it being! I loved the characters, the plot and the setting. What more could you ask for?! Kenneth Oppel has written another extraordinary masterpiece!

Matt Cruise and Kate DeVries are back and this time there after the treasure on the legendary 'ghost' ship "Hyperion" and all sorts of complications arise after it is publicaly known that Matt is the only person in the world who has the coordinates for the ship. Matt and Kate's relationship is also tried as they deal with the stress of the hunt and find themselves each falling for different people. They're going to have to decide whether love, money, or fame is the most important to them.

When I read 'Airborn', I LOVED it. This book is even better if that is possible. Since ground work for the characters and their world is well laid in 'Airborn', Kenneth Oppel wastes no time catching the read up to par in this page turner! The adventure takes off immediately, soaring till the end, leaving the reader to catch his breath. Congratulation to Kenneth Oppel for creating such a wonderful series! Packed with adventure, yet well ground and full-fleshed out characters, his awards are well-deserved.

    A Fly High Book

This book is one of the most awesome books I have read. The concept of the entire setting, problem etc, is too good. This book is way better than the first, "Airborn". I recommend this to anyone who needs a good quick read, that is full of adventure, passion, courage, adrenaline and suspicion . I LOVED this book.

I read this book like it would never be here again. Jam packed with pirates, gypsys, mystery, and other great subjects. Full of mystery and suspense if you read the Airborn series you will go away happy.

    Good Book!

SkyBreaker was a good book. I loved the part when they were going too high. I like that part because I never knew that you could die if you went too high in a plane. Therefore I learned something.

This book was the longest book I have ever read. It took me about 2 weeks to read it. I give this book 4 leafs out of 5 because the book had action but it sometimes got boring. I recommend this book to people that like reading airplane books (not an actual airplane though). I kept on visualizing it looking like a pirate ship in the sky. You people should read this book because this book is a pretty good book.

    Sincerely,
    BrotherDuck xD

First of all you can go beyond the atmosphere in some planes. No offense. In a regular airplane the cabin is pressurized so that at increasing high altitudes people are able to survive. Compared to when they were going high in the zeppelin or whatever, it was not pressurized.

Even Better Than the First (Airborn)

Matt and Kate hire an airship to help them find the legendary lost ship the Hyperion. Along with them on the journey are a crew of Sherpas, a debonair captain with designs on Kate, her prim chaperon and a feisty gypsy girl. They encounter all sorts of dangers as they fly into the uncharted heights of the sky.

I think I enjoyed Skybreaker even more than the first in this series, Airborn. Even though this series is classified as Fantasy, this volume definitely breaks into the science fiction genre and is very reminiscent of Verne's 20,000 Leagues. Lots of fun characters, excitement and adventure. I'm looking forward to the third book in the series which comes out this fall.

This book was a great sequel to Airborn, I found it was better too. The plot was much more fun to read and understand. The characters were great, always loving or hating the personalities, great description. Another must read.

I read this book in one day! It was so exciting and amazing. It really keeps you at the edge of your seat. But I want to know what happens next to Matt & Kate. And the other girl. This is a good book for guys or girls. And for people who aren't scared of heights.

Skybreaker by Kenneth Oppel, is an exciting, action- packed novel for teens. Once you pick the book up, you can't put it back down. The book is based in the past, which makes it interesting. The characters and setting are very creative, and the plot is fantastic. Kenneth Oppel did a great job writing this thrilling sequel to Airborn. Also, Skybreaker won this year's Red Maple Award! A book has to be good to win an award. Skybreaker is great for those of you ages 12 to 18. This is a must read, so next time you're in a Chapters or Indigo store, pick it up!

This is definitely one of the best books I've read so far. For people
that wouldn't normally enjoy teen fiction, this book is still for you.
Suits a wide variety of readers and ages. This is also one of the rare
stories that you can never put down, no matter how hard you try.
Jam-packed in every paragraph about a 15 year-old boy. Matt
Cruse's journey takes you to unimaginal places at 20,000 feet about
airships and survival, but still manages to play up more romance
than the previous book, Airborn. Still with the bold Kate, and many
new, unexpected characters and unpredictable twists, this book will
    take you to new heights.

Of course a sequel rarely tops the first book. But this book is an even more rare thing: Its just as good as the first! If you really enjoyed Oppel's Airborn, you'll love this. If you're looking for more Airborn-style action, this is it. This novel also fleshes the romance between Matt and Kate out a little more.
Personally, the thing I liked most about Airborn was the atmosphere it created, and the awesome characters. Well, there's no disappointment here! I still feel like I'm flying right along with Matt Cruse.
So in conclusion: If you're looking for a book to take you back into the sky, this is it.

If u were Kate de Vriesin this book u would feel extremly lucky to have Matt Cruse as ur BF. Matt and Co. go on an adventure to find riches and if he does ( which he did ) he is on the verge being a millionaire which includes him being the captain of an airship. I loved this book and simply loved Matt !
