I read this book four years ago while traveling in Europe. I had started it before I left and bought the second book in the series to bring with me as well. To this day I can still feel the rush of excitement as I tore through page after page with an insatiable appetite. This incredibly work of fantasy will draw you in like a black hole and keep you there forever. The series was so good that by 2/3s of the way through the trip I was finished the first two and went to great lengths to find an English bookstore in Paris to get the third one. It was worth every Euro.

Using all that her father has taught her about necromancy and sending dead spirits to rest – Sabriel travels into the depths of the Old Kingdom to rescue her father and to make sure that the dead are not freed from their bindings. Pursued by evil spirits and taking many crash landings on the way, Sabriel has to face one of the Greater Dead (possibly the greatest) and use all that she has learned from her father to defeat it. But can she do it without using Astarael – the Sorrowful – which when rung would make all who hurt slip into death. -- This book didn’t start slow at all, and that made me happy. It wasted no time in the beginning, and went right to making you form in your mind what the hell was going on with the setting. It has magic and technology mixed together, and the way that the author eased you into the world that Sabriel lived in was perfectly done. I enjoyed this book very very much. The one thing that I would say needs some work is some character issues. I know that in Nix’s writing style character’s personalities are all very simple, but still. I think that he could work on the main character being a little more interesting. She doesn’t really have personality traits and seems kind of neutral about everything. I just wish that there would be something else that made her unique, besides being full of courage just like every other protagonist in fiction books. The setting was wonderful, I loved the time and the world that Sabriel lived in. This is a great book, and I recommend it. I first read this book five years ago after my mom's friend recommended it to my brother and me. It is a great start to one of the best series I have ever read. It is amazingly clever. Keep in mind that it is written in a more mature manner than the Seventh Tower series(if any of you are young), so make sure you keep that in mind. The entire series is Garth Nix at his best.

This book, and the entire series, are so vastly different from anything else I have ever read. The world that Nix creates is so vivid, and creative. You can definetly get lost in these novels. The magic that is in this book is very different from other author's perspectives, which enhances the amazing qualities of the writing. This book only starts something that is amazing - a trilogy that still sends shivers up my spine, after having read it many, many times over the last 7 or 8 years. Highly recommend to teens and adults who like fantasy, magic and adventure novels.

This novel was fabulous. I love fantasy, and this book satisfied every taste. I love the dealings with death and the great magic systems, as well as creatures and artifacts. Superb. Bien traval, monsieur Nix.

Grabbed my attention from the first chapter and just wouldn't let go. The characters seem real and alive and the danger and magic are hypnotising. I reccomend this to anyone who loves adventure, magic and danger.

Right from the first chapter I could tell that this was an amazing book, and after that I could hardly put it down!!

Sabriel is a captivating and truly unique read. Nix has created a completely polished world that is vivid and thought through with great consideration. Instead of a static and flimsy tapestry, Sabriel provides layer upon layer of depth and fascinating magic. This is a world that completely pulls the reader in and pushes you to stretch your imagination. I can think of no other recent series to present such an original and truly colorful world.

WOW!!!! that pretty much it!!! I've read so many books its not funny and yet this one was so amazing!!!!! i just finished it and i cant wait to get the second one!!! i bet it will be way better than the first which had so many un expected twists! Its this kind of litterature that inspires me to want to be a writer!! I must say it was absolutely amazing!!!! (like most of the books ive read) I've read a couple other of Garth Nix's books but this one is by far the best one ever!!!!!! like i said it is absolutely amazing!!! and i would recomend this book to whoever likes a good thrilling read!!!!

This book was incredible. Actually, the whole series is incredible! It not only has adventure and magic but also has a mix of love and romance. I love how all the characters interact with each other in either formal or humorous ways!
