Salem's Lot

by Stephen King

Gallery Books | October 1, 2000 | Trade Paperback

Published a year after his stunning debut novel, Carrie, ''Salem''s Lot firmly cemented Stephen King''s name in the literary lexicon of great American storytellers. His rich and finely crafted tale of a mundane New England town under siege by the forces of darkness is both a homage to Bram Stoker''s classic Dracula and an allegory of our post-Vietnam society. Considered one of the most terrifying vampire novels ever written, it cunningly probes the shadows of the human heart -- and the insular evils of small-town America.

Jerusalem's Lot (a.k.a. 'Salem's Lot) is a small town. Ben has just moved here to do some writing. At the same time, two mysterious men have moved into town - they've bought the old Marsten House, a creepy old house that's been boarded up for years... since Hubert Marsten killed his wife and himself in the home. After a short time, people start dying and/or disappearing. There is something very wrong here...

It was quite good, and scary, but I think my hopes were set a little too high. I did manage to really scare myself the first night I was reading it - on my own, in the house, at night - but after that, I didn't get as scared as that first night. Overall, though, I still think King did a really good job with the atmosphere of the book. And, it's a really good story. If you want to be scared, read it at night; if you want to avoid that, daytime is better.

    One of Kings best

I loved this book. His characters were strong and believable as always. The vampires were evil with no romance about them. The ending is well done, which I can not say the same for his book "It"

The story line percieved in the original movie gives the novel no justice what so ever. I'll admit the beginning of the story is hard to get into, but when the book picked up mid way through, I found it incredibly hard to put down. Stephen King lets your mind create it's own vision with his erie style of writing. It's a phenomonal book that kept me reading into late hours of the night as I glanced over my shoulder more than once. Definately a creepy book that I wish didn't end as soon as it did.

Salem's Lot may be one of the most frightening and amazing novels I have ever read. I read Stephen King a lot but I read mostly his newer novels. After watching the Salem's Lot movie, I didn't think I'd read the book because the movie was pretty dumb. Although I did read it and I was amazed. If you want a good read pick up Salem's Lot about a town that becomes infested with vampires, and with an ending that leaves you wanting more. Pick up Salem's Lot and also read "Jerusalem's Lot" and "One for the Road", two short stories found in "Night Shift" that are affiliated with "Salem's Lot."

From Our Editors

A year after his chilling debut novel Carrie, Stephen King delivered this brilliant vampire classic. 'Salem's Lot now features a fascinating introduction in which King describes his inspiration for the novel. Dark forces besiege an ordinary New England town in this powerful tale drawing on Bram Stoker's Dracula and symbolizing post-Vietnam society. Delving into the darkness in the human heart, this frightening vampire tale exposes the evils that can lurk in small-town America.
