by Connie Willis

Random House Publishing Group | December 1, 1998 | Mass Market Paperbound

From Connie Willis, winner of multiple Hugo and Nebula Awards, comes a comedic romp through an unpredictable world of mystery, love, and time travel...

Ned Henry is badly in need of a rest.  He''s been shuttling between the 21st century and the 1940s searching for a Victorian atrocity called the bishop''s bird stump.  It''s part of a project to restore the famed Coventry Cathedral, destroyed in a Nazi air raid over a hundred years earlier.

But then Verity Kindle, a fellow time traveler, inadvertently brings back something from the past.  Now Ned must jump back to the Victorian era to help Verity put things right--not only to save the project but to prevent altering history itself.

What a fun read. I've read all of Willis' books in the same universe, and although To Say Nothing of the Dog wasn't as intense as the others, it was certainly just as elaborate. The best part about this one is the use of humor and lovable characters. Would be a great introduction to the sci-fi genre for Jane Austen fans!

  • Highly enjoyable time travel from futurist England to Victorian England. If you loved "Doomday Book", "Fire Watch", Blackout by Connie Willis you will love this book too! Again, this is a book I could read over and over. Time travel is certainly interesting in Connie Willis world.

I won't bother with a plot overview on this one as so many others have done a great job on that!

I will however say that this was a great time travel book! It has all the best elements of Science Fiction and Historical Fiction! I love the witty banter, the picture-perfect settings, and just enough comic relief and hilarity to make it a perfect summer read. Although, apparently, very centered on Jerome K. Jerome's "Three Men in a Boat", one doesn't have to read it first to understand this novel. Highly recommended to fans of Kage Baker's "The Company" series.

    Lighthearted Romp

This book is so much fun, I've been forcing it on all of my friends. It's a hilarious, yet absolutely gripping, comedy of errors set alternately in the future (after the invention of time travel, but in a recognizable England) and in Victorian England, in the late 1880's on the Thames. Much mention is made of Jerome K. Jerome's Three Men In A Boat, which shares the Victorian setting and much of the style of humour, but it isn't necessary to read Jerome first (I didn't) in order to follow the story.

This book was nominated for a Nebula award - a high honour in science fiction circles - and fans of the genre will be captivated by Willis' ideas as well as her fabulous writing style. People who normally don't enjoy science fiction will also love this book.

From the Critics

"The most hilarious book of its kind since John Irving''s The Water-Method Man and A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole."
--Des Moines Sunday Register

"An utter delight.  Ms.  Willis''s unique, engaging voice will carry you off to a place where chaos theory makes perfect sense, time travel is a REASONABLE mode of transport, and safeguarding the fate of humanity is a respectable day job."
--Amanda Quick

"Willis effortlessly juggles comedy of manners, chaos theory and a wide range of literary allusions [with a] near flawlessness of plot, character and prose."
--Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"I have long thought that Jerome K. Jerome''s Three Men In A Boat is one of the highest points of Inimitable British Humor.  I chuckle; I gurgle; I know those three men--to say nothing of the dog.  And now I am convinced there was a woman concealed in that boat, too: Connie Willis."
--Laurie R. King
