Scar Tissue

by Anthony Kiedis

Hyperion | October 19, 2005 | Trade Paperback

Scar Tissue is rated 4.92 out of 5 by 25.
Now in paperback, the New York Times bestseller by one of rock''s most provocative figures
Scar Tissue is Anthony Kiedis''s searingly honest memoir of a life spent in the fast lane. In 1983, four self-described "knuckleheads" burst out of the mosh-pitted mosaic of the neo-punk rock scene in L.A. with their own unique brand of cosmic hardcore mayhem funk. Over twenty years later, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, against all odds, have become one of the most successful bands in the world. Though the band has gone through many incarnations, Anthony Kiedis, the group''s lyricist and dynamic lead singer, has been there for the whole roller-coaster ride.

Whether he''s recollecting the influence of the beautiful, strong women who have been his muses, or retracing a journey that has included appearances as diverse as a performance before half a million people at Woodstock or an audience of one at the humble compound of the exiled Dalai Lama, Kiedis shares a compelling story about the price of success and excess. Scar Tissue is a story of dedication and debauchery, of intrigue and integrity, of recklessness and redemption--a story that could only have come out of the world of rock.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very AnthonyKiedes-y.. No more no less. Plain old awesome bone-crunching mayhem psychedelic s** funk from heaven Anthony Kiedes. Fans of Red Hot would know what definitely relate to this. Its really honestly written and makes you feel like you really know this guy and like you were with him when he smoked his first joint and stuff. The pictures were great, too. ;)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Under the Bridge Scar Tissue is the overly picturesque, honest yet totally self-centered memoir of the king of freak and funk, Red Hot Chili Peppers’ frontman, Anthony Kiedis. Marketed to us as the Red Hot Chili Peppers story, the book is impulsive, raw and entertaining, much like Kiedis himself, however lacks any self-reflection, emotional depth and seems to deny the existence of Kiedis’ conscience at all. Entirely candid, the book lacks any sort of narrative skeleton, and those without a prior knowledge or foundation of the Red Hot Chili Peppers might be easily lost amongst the pages of this memoir. At times, Kiedis seemed to have come off as arrogant. His band mates, as well as the actual legendary band that continuously exceeds expectations and drops jaws internationally that he founded, are mentioned maybe once or twice. At one point, he describes the band’s original guitarist, Hillel Slovak as his “soulmate” followed by half a page of rambling about Hillel, and then is vanished from the book until his death a couple years later, which gets a couple sentences itself. Despite the absence of any real thought, sentiment or sense of time at all, the book is a passionate, absorbing and an easy read. If deviant amounts of sex, drugs and maybe a smidge of rock ‘n’ roll float your boat, this book is for you. But then, you’re probably Anthony Kiedis.

Anthony discloses details about his relationship with his that a really moving. This book also includes pictures, therefore giving you an idea of what was going on during that time. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Truely inspirational I read Scar Tissue last summer and was very pleased with the content. The book is not only written by the lead singer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Anthony Kiedis, there are also many pictures of himself growing up with the band we all know. The troubles and problems they went through before (and after) they reached fame is all identified clearly through the course of the book. After I finished the book I not only understood the true meaning of their music, I also understood that being famous is not easy and a lot of people fall to drugs, alcoholism, and other poor decisions when they let their fame get to their heads. This was an amazing book and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys their music and would like to learn a little more about the band.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A powerful story about a rock star drug addict This story is both shocking and entertaining and, by the end of it, you not only fall in love with Anthony Kiedis but you learn that being a rock star is not all it's cut out to be. Although Kiedis lived the life of a rock star, what stands out about his story is not the raucous good times, but the endless times he struggled with drug abuse deep-rooted in him from a young age. Kiedis has suffered incredibly from his drug abuse, battling not only his addiction, but endangering his health, wasting his money, and causing pain to the people he cares for. Growing up in a sober environment, reading his story was extremely compelling. We tend to look down on drug abusers, but Kiedis evokes compassion and sympathy because he teaches you that the hold of being addicted to drugs is more powerful than sober people can understand without experiencing it. Despite a lifelong battle with drug abuse, and love and loss of friends and girlfriends, he was able to channel his adversity into writing song lyrics. He does not regret any experiences or decisions he has made in his life and has come out of it more mature and philosophical. I have become a bigger fan of The Red Hot Chili Peppers after reading Scar Tissue. In addition, his story has given perspective to my own life and taught me that it is important to experience the highs and low of life because it makes you not only a wiser, but also more humble person.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Suck My Kiss Scar Tissue is an enthralling autobiography written by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers’ frontman, Anthony Kiedis. As a longtime Chilli Pepper fan I jumped at the chance to read this indepth look into the life of one of the most interesting characters in the music industry. Raised in unusual circumstances by a straight-laced, caring mother and a drug-dealing father, Kiedis does not speak with any bitterness towards his father. Speaking in great detail about many bizarre childhood memories, such a smoking dope with his father at the age of 12, I found Kiedis truly loving and accepting of his father’s faults. To him this man was his hero, and unfortunately he followed closely in his footsteps. Kiedis has a fierce appetite for drugs and it proves to be a constant struggle for him during his life. It’s the same story for many rock stars, but what I found surprising was Kiedis’ resistance to living ‘the high life’. As a man who was living the rock dream, and making the money that came along with it, he refused to buy his own home, instead shacking up on people’s couches along the way. I had never realized that while he was on top of the music world, he was still running away from his fame and choosing to get high with homeless people instead of the wealthy which now surrounded him. One of his most famous songs, “Under the Bridge”, refers to time spent with the homeless under overpasses and bridges all over California. Another interesting piece of this book was Kiedis’ ties to women and the detail in which he remembers the multiple women he was close to in his life. Attracted to the strange and beautiful, he was completely in love with the idea of women and the closeness he felt with them. This probably stems from his deep connection to his mother, whom he adored. Searching his whole life for a way to become more real, Kiedis realizes finally that he has given up everything for drugs – especially his health. Scar Tissue takes the reader on an incredible journey through the rollercoaster ride that was Kiedis’ life. Although it touches on the band and the friendships he had with his fellow bandmates, I was happily surprised to learn so much more about the man himself and the lessons he learned living a genuinely wild life.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely Amazing ! This book is amazing! It targets mostly teens, and lots of readers who are interested in the progress of become a World Wide famous band and interested in drug addicts. Whoever is also interested in the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and enjoy their music should also read it. It's interesting and very entertaining reading about the life of this musician and his life experiences . Anthony went through some very rough times through his childhood as his dad was a drug dealer and his mother was poor. It is written in firstperson which gets you more attached to the character. The becoming of his career is shocking and also amazing. He went through many band members and members dying of drug overdoses until he found the right ones. The biography has many lyrics that he wrote in it, especially some of songs you have never heard of because they were written while the band was unknown. It also goes through his relationship and his sex life which is overwhelming considering he was so young when he started getting into women. The bio. has many photos of interesting parts in the book like concerts they had, him and his ex.girlfriends, him as a baby and a child. This book is deffinetely a 5/5 and I strongly recommend it! I love Anthony Kiedis.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Completely "Unputdownable!" This really was one of the best books I've ever read. From page one it was completely absorbing right to the very end. The ultimate page turner. What an eventful life he's led. A truly amazing story that will grip you and never let go. Bluntly, I cannot understand how someone could not wholeheartedly love this book. Do yourself a favour, pick up a copy as soon as possible.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Above and beyond what I expected. This book went beyond my expectations. You most definitely do not need to be a fan of the Peppers to enjoy it (although, I became an even bigger fan after reading it). Its what you would expect - a dark story filled with lots of sex, drugs, and rock and roll. But it goes far beyond that, and you see a spiritual side of Anthony as he battles his way through numerous rough situations. You also learn about their struggles in the band, and how they finally found the perfect chemistry. You will never listen to one of their songs the same again. I loved this especially down to the very last sentence (my favorite)- it was perfect.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Great Read This book was incredible. I'm a big Chili Peppers fan and reading through about his life and lifestyles helped me to understand their music and what was happening in his life at those times. What a wild childhood and one of a kind.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I've developed a crush on Keidis... I have always enjoyed the RHCP however, I wouldn't have placed them amongst my top 10... or even perhaps top 20 favourite bands. But I have gained a new appreciation for the boys, and of course especially Kiedis, upon reading Scar Tissue. It is a fascinating story of Kiedis' life and the reason I adored this autobiography so much is how he seems to cherish and appreciate every experience he's had along the way, the positive ones, and especially the negative ones, because he knows that each one of those experiences has helped mold him into the person that he is today. It's his passion for life that has caused me to develop a little crush on the guy... ;)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from amazing Anthony Kiedis' memoir, is simply amazing. Its a dark downward spiral, into the world of drugs and self indulgence. Personally I never really was to much of a Red Hot Chili Peppers fan, I couldn't name more than two songs by them. Yet I loved this book its definatly one of my favorites. So even if your not into the band you'll still probobly love it. I recomend it to everyone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Any RHCP fan MUST read this book! Tony's your brother halfway through.. He brings new life to songs you've been rockin' to, blazin' to, and freakin' to most of your life. Great insight into the dynamics behind the music and he lays out a deep understanding of the band's style and philosophy. Tony's a poet, an inspiration, and a marked influence on the personality of our generation. If you call yourself a Pepper's fan you'll be one tenfold after this read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it! I was absolutely blown away by the depth and emotion of Anthony Kiedis' memoir. Having been a huge fan of the Chili Peppers for many years, I was always curious of whether or not there is more to these guys than just making great music. Anthony's voice will guide you towards an enjoyable read. Couldn't put it down.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Breathtaking This book literally sucked the wind out of me. Emotional and thoughtful, deep and disturbing. I have always loved the RHCP as a band but never identified with them as individuals until this book. A.K. is a meteor-the likes of which this world rarely sees. Unbelievable that someone could do this much to themselves and live to tell the tale. My greatest hope is that Anthony has found what he has been searching for all this time, and that he has come out on the other side a sage-r, more satisfied human being. He has done the homework. I'm digging out all the music-it's on TAPE! Can't get enough and will read over and over till it all sinks in.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Scar Tissue This book was a great piece of work! The way that Anthony describes everything just makes you feel a part of it all. It is such a rollercoaster ride of emotions. You can’t help but feel it all with him. He definitely describes everything very candidly. He writes from other people’s views and not just him selves so you understand from other angles. This book also shows very strong relationships (and some very rocky ones too), and gets very into depth with the feelings that arise within them. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone because you really get to understand the importance of relationships and life itself. It’s definitely one I’ll be picking up and reading again and again!
