Shutter Island Tie-in: A Novel

by Dennis Lehane

Harpercollins Publishers | August 3, 2011 | Trade Paperback

The year is 1954. U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels and his new partner, Chuck Aule, have come to Shutter Island, home of Ashecliffe Hospital for the Criminally Insane, to investigate the disappearance of a patient. Multiple-murderess Rachel Solando is loose somewhere on this barren island, despite having been kept in a locked cell under constant surveillance. As a killer hurricane bears relentlessly down on them, a strange case takes on even darker, more sinister shades?with hints of radical experimentation, horrifying surgeries, and lethal countermoves made in the cause of a covert shadow war. No one is going to escape Shutter Island unscathed, because nothing at Ashecliffe Hospital is remotely what it seems.

    * SPOILER ALERT

    Teddy Daniels and Chuck Aule, two marshals take a ferry from Boston to go to Shutter Island, place of a psychiatric hospital, where we can find dangerous patients. The marshals were called to the island to investigate the disappearance of a patient, Rachel Solando. This lady could have killed her three children. In her cell, only a sheet with numbers and words without meaning, which are similar to codes, was found. Teddy believes that a character named Laeddis is on the island and he's convinced that this person have killed his wife, Dolores, in a recent fire. After several searches, Teddy wondered if there was no presence of a conspiracy between the employees and the doctors of this hospital. The discoveries that he will make will allow us to understand that this whole story is actually fiction. Teddy Daniels, patient of the hospital Aschecliff is actually Andrew Laeddis, a man who killed his wife because she had killed their children.

    Shutter Island is good book because it has a good suspense that make you want to know the end. You get attached to the character of Teddy Daniels because of his hard childhood after the death of his father. It can be considered as a violent book and it's not easy to understand so the target audience is older teenager 17 to 25 and adult.

    A True Experience!

    Lehane does a fantastic job of getting his readers to go through the same psychological experience as his main character. The rollercoaster of certainty and then uncertainty...and then certainty and uncertainty is insane (no pun intended). Had me hooked from the first chapter - Lehane didn't waste 1/2 the book setting the story up like so many authors do. I'd recommend this book to everyone. Though dark and disturbing at times, it's truly an experience you don't want to miss!

    Shutter Island is a tremendously satisfying thriller. It plays games with your mind the whole way through, and is an exiting page turner. The suspense is incredible with a plot that will keep you guessing. I liked that it had some comedy to it and was not serious throughout the whole novel, and lightened the mood and made it an enjoyable read.

    Chuck Aule: "All I know is it's a mental hospital."
    Teddy Daniels: "...for the criminally insane."

    It's a great mystery, and then there's that ending. I truly recommend it to anyone who loves mystery and suspense novels. I loved the book so much! It is everything I look for in a criminal fiction novel and covered all aspects off a thrilling page turner. I also look forward to watching the movie, with Leonardo DiCaprio portraying Teddy Daniels.

    This story was easy. Lehane writes in a very readable style with lots of dialogue that makes the pages turn fast.
    Given the time, this book is easily readable in a day or so.
    The story is an interesting one with a surprise ending that might leave you scratching your head thinking about the possibilities.
    A good "beach book" or type of read that you can pick up and put down at a moments notice.
