    Excellent Book

When I first read this book 10 years ago it blew me away. I was in university at the time, and doing a children's lit course, and read a number of award winners to supplement the 15 or so books we read for the course. This book was one I picked up that summer and I have been a huge fan of Kenneth Oppel ever since. This story is a coming-of-age story; it is the story of Shade a young silverwing bat who is the runt in his colony. During the annual migration to the colony's winter roost, he is separated from his friends and family. Shade sets out to find his colony and alone and desperate he braves the outside world. As winter approaches he must find his colony or a safe haven quickly, or else he will perish.

This book is very well written, told in the black and white world of a bat and echo vision. The story is fascinating and the adventure runs non-stop. The first time I read this I could not put it down. This time through I took it a little slower and really savoured the book. It won 11 literary awards and has numerous sequels now. Pick it up for an excellent read.

A fascinating blend of history, mythology, and biology, Silverwing is also a gripping adventure story. Shade is a spunky, determined character that kids will identify with, despite his wings.

Award-winning Canadian fiction, this series is a great choice for book reports!

This book is about bats who are trying to find their new hibernating home. The main character, Shade, gets lost along the way. Shade is trying to find his father and the new hibernating spot. I liked reading this book because the characters seem so real and I learned a lot about bats. There is a lot of action in the book as well. I thought it was a great book.

silverwing is amazing! its creative, sophisticated, and very tasteful. the silverwing series has got to be kenneth oppel's greatest books. the plot is very simple, a young bat called "shade" is oftenly teased because of how clumsy and weak he is, so he sets off on a mission to prove himself worthy to the others but most importantly himself. out to find his father, he meets a tough female bat the about his age as well as a gigantic cannible bat (eats other bats) and his miserable sidekick. as the story unravels, more characters and places are discovered. what started out as a simple plot, becomes a complex one that links every detail together. silverwing has truly created a genre of it own. if you havent read this, you dont know what your missing! its one of the best novels ive read in my life, and its perfect for just about any age, capable of reading novels. once you start reading it, you wont want to put it down.

This book was so much fun! When Shade is lost from his family, it was sad, but then his adventures to get back to Hibernaculum made up for it. I didn't want to put it down and I'm an adult! A must-read for all young readers.

I thought I didn't like fantasy and adventure books, but I was wrong! This book is imaginative and creative. It takes on the different perspective of a bat! Wonderful tale! If you liked this book, you should read the sequels: Sunwing and Firewing, both of which are just as engrossing!

This really was an extraordinary book! I was given this book to read for a book report and fell in love with it. I finished it in two days and wanted to read more about Shade. I ended up buying Silverwing as well as the two sequels: Sunwing & Firewing. You just have to read the whole story! You won't be able to put it down! It will touch your heart and keep you coming back for more! It is a great addition to any book collection, you'll see!!

Well, I have really enjoyed Silverwing, my favorite book is actually is Silverwing's sequel, Sunwing. Kenneth Oppel (the author) is very detailed and has a humongous vocabulary which makes me have a clearer prospective of what is going on. I can almost picture Shade and all his friends from the book. It makes me read as fast as I can and I get transported into another place. Wow, Kenneth Oppel, your one good author.

I like the sespence the author puts in the book.Like some of the endings in the chapters.
What I don't like is not much but I think there shold be more romance and comedy.
I wonder if the author is going to write any more books about bats then planned.
The recommendation I give for the age is about 8 and over. And if you like Harry Potter I guarantee you will like Silverwing
