Mr. Nix has written another story in the Keys to the Kingdom series and this time we have our young hero, Arthur, as an unwilling recruit in the Denizen army. The novel wastes no time getting him into this predicament and he quickly realizes that he is without any real allies while he is at boot camp. Furthermore, the leader of the entire army, Sir Thursday, wishes him dead. If that isn't bad enough, his enemies have installed an evil doppelganger back on Earth to replace him and this clone is going around spreading a contagious mind-control plague. Arthur has to entrust his long-suffering friend, Leaf, to help him out back home while he endures the rigorous military training. Arthur ends up in battle halfway through the tale with an invading horde of Nithlings - creatures made of nothingness - who are being led by a rebellious son of the Architect (sort of a Lucifer-like
character). The book reads very fast and light and it is up to Mr. Nix's high standards as always. At times the story seems a little too rushed as though there were too many plot devices in too short a time. An enjoyable addition to the series all in all.
